R380 vs lt77 bellhousing
So I've been to hell and back trying to figure out the v8 bellhousings. From wrong suffixes, wrong pinion shafts etc. This may help someone and may also highlight any wrong information I have. Feel free to correct!
The lt77 and r380 v8s have the same bolt patterns both ends and same general shape and are easily mistaken for each other. BUT.
LT77 IS 300mm tall
R380 IS 275mm tall.
I have found two pinions shafts for the r380. One with the smaller suffix j "gear" and larger suffix k/l gear. BOTH are the same length.
This length is shared with the shorter lt77 pinion shaft which unless you use the r380 bellhousing (275mm) won't fit a v8. The lt77 has a longer pinion shaft that suits the 300mm bellhousing.
Have I gotten any of this wrong? These are my deductions after a lot of effort to build a v8 out of a 300tdi r380 (and a suffix j at that)!

the bell housings are different length between the LT77 and R380 as the rear 5th speed housings are also different, the 380 was made as a direct replacement for the lt77 so the overall lengths with bell housings are the same

the 380 J pinion is the same length as the K/L pinion but the bearing diameter and length differs as the pinion bearing differs Dave
