First maintenance appointment - Go to the dealer?
I bought my first Land Rover - a Defender 130 X Dynamic which I absolutely love. It's the perfect family car and overall caravan. I'm about to hit 5k miles and I really want to make this vehicle last until it can no longer run which is why I want to make sure oil changes are right on the dot.

What are some of the early things I should be doing to ensure this? My thought was to get the first oil change, hopefully for free from Land Rover West Chester, and start understanding the regular maintenance involved in keeping this vehicle on the road. Would the dealer provide me with service manuals that I can buy as reference?

I know to keep these things running is somewhat a labor of love and I've been driving an EV the past decade so it's a significant change for me.

P.S. New to the forum and look forward to potentially meeting like minded motorists!

Welcome to the forum
You don’t say which engine is in your 130 - I assume being in the USA it’s a P400.
The oil change interval is shown in the online owner’s manual and many consider the interval to be too long. I had a D240 4 cylinder diesel for nearly 3 years, its oil change interval was 21000 miles or 2 years whichever came first. I dis-regarded it and had a battle with the dealership when I wanted an oil and filter change done at 11,000 miles/ 12 months. Eventually they agreed (only after I said I would go to a local independent LR specialist for the work!) and did it out of schedule and at the same time they filled the AdBlu and as well as changing the the oil filter they changed the pollen filter and did it for an amazingly low cost. The car then had its official 1st service that is basically an oil and filter change on schedule at 2 years old. The only issue with doing out of schedule servicing is that you must use JLR approved parts and oils to maintain your warranty - hence why I really wanted the dealership to do it as it was then also recorded in the car’s electronic service records held by JLR. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Yes it's a P400 engine and I couldn't agree with your story more. There's no harm in changing the oil more frequently and it should be an easy process. The Land Rover dealership is an hours away from me so I really want to make sure the car, while under warranty, is looked at by professionals while I learn up on how to maintain it afterwards.

Steven Firth in Canada posted this on YouTube - he’s a bit further away from his dealership too!

As I said earlier make sure you use JLR kit and keep your receipts just in case they call into doubt if you have to make a warranty claim. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

l would certainly carry out an oil change before it hits 10,000 miles.

Your dealer will carry out the oil change but l doubt they will do it for free.
