If the calliper bolts are good condition then it's a 13mm 12 point socket.
If they are a little "weathered" then a 1/2 inch AF 12 point works, they might knocking on with a tapping stick as a tight fit is preferred as the bolts can be stubborn. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest |

It's also 82NM torque because it's a 10.9 rated bolt. I copper grease the heads on any new ones I fit to stave off corrosion. Have had more than enough dramas in the past!
I made a video about this one that was rounding and successfully removed, if it helps ?si=1c3cY76kC6JLp6EV LR Workshop New parts illustrations https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...ed-corners Find a Defender's history and spec: https://defender.lrworkshop.com Last edited by Will@LRW on 16th Jun 2025 1:15pm. Okay, thanks for the info! So it's not a multi-tooth profile (XZN) but a "normal" double hexagonal profile if I've understood correctly. And yes, 82Nm as noted in the WSM, my bad.
I have an induction heater for screws, maybe I'll use it here. |

Yes double hex 12 point 13mm socket.
Douse them in Plusgas for at least a week in advance, and even then you’ll probably have to resort to alternative means. I ended up using a Dremel to machine two flats on them. Good luck 👍 ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Let us know how it goes, it's always interesting to hear alternative techniques!
Have corrected my post to 10.9 rating as photos above show. I was thinking of disc to hub bolts which are 12.9 LR Workshop New parts illustrations https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...ed-corners Find a Defender's history and spec: https://defender.lrworkshop.com |

The very best socket for removing brake caliper bolts is a Snap On SW161A 1/2” 12point socket, not really that expensive at all at £20.88. That will get all but the most rusted bolts out.
Plusgas etc is a bit of a waste of time as the bolts are (or should be) loctited. |

For the record: I have used plusgas twice, it can't do any harm. I then degreased the head with brake cleaner and used a (normal) 13mm 12 spline drive socket with my impact wrench. All the bolts came off easily, I was a bit afraid of cracking my socket and ordered a 12 spline drive socket from hazet to be on the safe side fur the future.
The only thing that annoyed me was that the ABS ring was attached with 3 stud bolts on one side and 4 instead of 5 on the other. I'm trying to smooth this out with short 6mm screws from the outside -- if it works. Otherwise I start again ![]() But thanks again for the support! |

This is the only socket I ever broke I believe 13mm 1/2 drive 1m breaker bar, it might have been a thin wall socket. Range Rover I recall: Poing! there it was spit open. Had to Next Day Amazon me a new one, still in my tool chest.

In those sort of situations, a quality impact wrench and a good fitting impact socket make all the difference.
Noting you can get good 12point impact sockets for 12 point fasteners but always use good 6 point impact sockets on hex heads to avoid rounding. If you do have thread locker to deal with then, if safe to do so, the application of heat will soften it sufficient to ease its removal. There is always a debate between using a breaker bar vs an impact wrench , however I favour the impact wrench as I’ve yet to shear a bolt with one, whereas previously I have sheared bolts using a breaker bar. |

As 12-spline power/impact versions are not so common (for a reason!), here is the designation of the HAZET socket: 900SZ-13 Irrespective of this, the reference to the 1/2" 12-spline socket is also very helpful and can be taken into account. Should deliver a tight fit! |
