Heater blower fan woes
Long story short.

Found two problems the motor was seized and the loom in the wing was chaffed through. At this point I was getting 3ohms or thereabouts across the resistor for low speed.

Bought a new fan Big Cry a motor a plate and a bit of plastic abused the plastic quite significantly.

Fixed up the loom and wrestled the lot back into place.

Before connecting the final 2 pin plug to the motor I used the voltmeter to see what I was getting at the connector. 0v off, 0v slow, 12.8v full speed Big Cry

Looks like the resistor has packed up with all the moving about.

As I plan on this being a keeper still do I:

a) live with single max speed fan

b) Bite the bullet and spend a fortune on a new resistor to keep it original (not that the rest of it is, mud console, lots of Carling switches and metal binnacle etc)

or

c)bite the other bullet and buy the Land Reiziger variable speed loom and controller

There is a D option which is to build my own version of the land reiziger (considerably cheaper) but no where near as original looking as speed control would be a rotary knob which I'm not sure where I would put. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

If it were me I would stick with full speed. I hardly ever use the 1/2 speed option.

Rotary knob to the right of the steering wheel. Might have been a hole for a choke on petrol models? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I was looking at PWM kits on ebay for less than £8. They have an on off switch and the variable speed knob, my concern is the quality and longevity of the componentry as well as where to fit the switch and knob.

I could bypass the included switch by switching the negative via the existing controller (assuming that isn't the prolblem) and then it's just the rotary which could indeed go in the nice spare hole on the steering column. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

There's probably an option E where you buy a, no doubt much cheaper, non-original resistor and repair it that way. You'd have to determine the resistance of the original but I doubt it needs to be too accurate. Darren

That is also an option.

I believe it is 2.5ohms or 3ohms depending on what you read and where.

What I'm not so sure about is the power rating that it needs.

That said I think there is a guy on Eblag that sells a kit which allows for a "slightly faster" slow setting which wouldn't be a bad option as long as it isn't the switch that is giving me grief. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

I bought one of the kits off eBay. It's a gold resistor, plus the diagram of how to connect it. All fine although I never use half speed anyway.

Well, I'll just put in a good word for the Landreiziger kit.

I fitted one of these several years ago. I'd have to check to be sure but easily 5 or 6 years, and it's been great.

I don't know what % of the time it spends on full vs somewhere along the range between there and off but it's just a well made and very functional piece of kit.

If you're handy with electronics etc then maybe a DIY alternative makes sense - but if my L'reiziger control failed I'd buy another. Donald

It would appear that I have a self healing system as slow blow is back this morning. I'm wondering if the boyconfusedbflap open with slow position Whistle 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.
