 2004 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Tonga Green
Tyre pressure help
Morning all - hope you’re well

I’m due to do a long distance journey (4-5hrs) with 5 people total, plus a LOAD of kit.. 5 rucksacks, 9 tents, provisions etc etc. (off to Glastonbury if anyone’s interested Mr. Green)

Can anyone recommend front & rear tyre pressure?

I’m on 16” Boost alloys with 265/70R16 tyres (pic below). Any guidance much appreciated!

30/36f and 45/55r i would be looking at for economy but it will be hard off the tarnac!

For handling prob 10psi in rear more than what you normally run and i doubt you would notice difference Cheers

As an aside, 265/70 is a slightly odd size for a Defender. They're typically 235/85 or 265/75, which are the standard sizes and are as close to the same diameter as makes no odds. Yours are about an inch smaller in diameter and so your speedo will under over read slightly. Darren

Good to know! Do you think the previous owner just put the ‘wrong’ tyres on? Neutral

Other than the speedo issue should I be worried about anything else?

I imagine they were cheaper than standard sized ones.

It's not the end of the world but might impact your MPG (more revs for a given speed) and your ground clearance is slightly reduced. On the plus side, it'll be slightly nippier off the mark due to the effective lower gearing. Darren

Your MPG calculations will be meaningless because the reported miles from the speedo will be 'miles' out (see what I did there? Laughing ).

You are also highly unlikely to be prosecuted for speeding because your normally optimistic landrover speedo will now likely be reading crazy speeds (possibly only doing 23-24mph for an indicated 30mph).

You really need to test your speedo against a GPS device or a timed known distance. You also need to check the mileometer by driving a known distance and seeing what the mileometer reports (at least 10 miles should help you get somewhere close to accurate).

As far as tyre pressures go, I run my 110 at 30-32 psi all round (currently on 255/85R16 BFG MTs) and this seems to be the optimal balance between comfort, economy and even tyre wear. If I am towing or running heavier laden for a big distance then I will go to maybe 35Fr/40Rr just to firm things up but not sure the difference is really noticeable?

to help aid your tyre pressure choice there is a little plate inside one of the front door pillars giving the recommended range of pressures - its also in the handbook.

I have a camper conversion so have a little more weight to carry all the time than most and with standard wheels and tyers run with 35psi front 50psi rear which is comfortable for my style of driving.

Make of this what you will - your speedo will over read but not by much. You could look at fitting a Speedo Healer, which is pretty easy, or just drive in the knowledge that you have a safety margin for the indicated forward speed.

As has been stated - 235/85R16 and 265/75R16 are near enough identical

No, the speedo will over-read with smaller tyres. The speedometer will display a higher speed than that at which the vehicle is travelling, not a lower speed.
