td5 head bolt sequence - really 5 step?
Hi,
Just tightening hread bolts after replacing hed gasket on my 10p TD5. So tightening sequence is

1) 30Nm
2). 65Nm
3). Tighten to 90deg
4). Tighten to 180 deg
5). Tighten to 45 deg


ok so ive done steps 1-4 and am at step 5

whimpering a bit do haveto make an effort turning the head bolts.

not bothered about the effort, more concerned about snappinhg the head bolts. Do I rteally have to do the last 45 deg?

What do other people do ?

Case of just get on with it or is 1-4 enough

Yes you must do all the steps. The head bolts are stretch bolts and need the incremental torquing down.

It is assumed that you have blown out the holes where the cylinder head bolts screw in, because if there is any oil left in them, this oil can cause the cylinder head to not fit well

In that case a piece of wire with rag on bottom to soak up the oil, will have to suffice.

Northern Ireland 2006 Defender 90 Td5 HT Bonatti Grey
Take one of your old head bolts and cut some grooves lengthwise in it with and angle grinder and use it to clean the threads out. Lightly Oil your new bolts and under the heads of the new bolts and follow the full sequence as they’re Torque-to-Yield (TTY) bolts hence the degrees sequence on the td5.

Or an air line and blow it out. Or… brake cleaner and spray it in there then forceps with a bit of rag to dab up the remains.
