Td5 traction control off road
1999 plate very early td5. Fitted with abs and traction control, recently fitted a new transfer box and on the first trial I hadn’t had time to connect the diff lock light. On steep climbs the traction control was pulsing so quickly the brake pedal would be solid and non operational. I checked the servo vacuum and that seemed fine when I got back and read up on the fractional control system I came to the conclusion that the diff lock light sent a signal to the wabco ecu to dial down the traction control. Reconnected the diff lock light and at todays trial was exactly the same to the point where if I failed a hillclimb I would have an uncontrolled descent. The abs and tc lights are not on and no faults stored all checked with nanocomm so what have I done wrong ? Any help much appreciated si

So, not exactly sure what you are asking. Seems like TC is working??? Is it not? Perhaps you are asking about ABS failing when descending a hill??

Based on what you wrote, unless I am misinterpreting it, why are you pushing the pedal when TC is engaged? You are trying for forward momentum, are you not? TC will activate and pulse when needed but not continuously, unless you are in muck. Are you talking (asking) about ABS function rather then TC? Or… is it that when TC is activated ABS fails??

If this is the case my bet is your ABS module has seized solenoids and requires a rebuild. Cheap fix but often hard to diagnose. BTW a D2 ABS module works perfectly just fit it exactly as the Defender module and ignore the pipe markings. The Defender module is like 10 times the cost of a D2 unit. Rebuild is quite cheap. Sorry not explained myself well. Before I changed the transfer box if I was at the top of a failed hillclimb I would come off the throttle and apply the brakes and Landrover would stop on the hill select reverse in low range and potter backwards down the hill. Since changing the transfer box seems the tc is working like mad on a hillclimb come off the throttle hit the brake and it’s a hard pedal hence no brakes and a quick uncontrolled descent down. After researching I thought that the tc ecu looked for a signal from the diff lock light and dialled the tc down so reconnected the diff lock light switch but at this weekends trial it was still the same hard pedal. Thanks for the reply and sorry for not explaining to well

Have you plugged in a Nanocom and read codes? 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

I’m still thinking it’s your module. I had a similar issue a few years ago with my 99 110. Replaced it and fixed the issue. Literally random right front lock up and pedal super hard but all others no braking.
And no codes. Also consider swapping ABS ECU for a known working one…. See what happens.

Look into it and let us know. Good luck 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Hi Si,
I hope it isn’t the ABS unit…

Don’t forget - my failed ABS unit didn’t throw up any fault codes on your Nanocom.

I owe you a favour or two so shout if you need a hand 👍

Cheers,

Will
