head gasket or oil cooler, not sure wich

Hi,
Sufferring from a lot of water loss and no visible exit signs. Local garage said theres exhaust fumes in coolant system and all the hoses pressursise almost immediately. Driving at about 40mph no coolant loss. Anythnig above and get water leaking past the header tank cap.

Got a new head gasket and at the state where head is loose ready to lift off. As its a 10p also got some steel dowels as dont know if the garage that changed the head/gasket last year ( or year before time flies ...) replaced them.

Having taken off the rocker cover there's loads of oil/water emulsion in there. About 6 months ago had to replace the turbo and while i was at it i refurbed the oil cooler. Thing is, the cooler seemed to come with 4 seals and (as far as I could see) only places for 2 of them ... so i used 2 and assumed there were 2 spare.
Now wondering if i did something wrong on the cooler causing water leak

Needles to say no instrucutions with the refurb kit. So, by only using 2 seals did i do something wrong?

ok so took the head off ... have a look at the head gasket ... there are definigtely holes where there shouldn't be holes

Also, why use the corrrect dowels to hole the hesad on when you can use bits of HSS drill bits! Arghhh!!!!

Wow! Have you been running anti-freeze? That corrosion at the coolant jackets is bad for the period of time it has had the new gasket!

Always use OAT antifreeze. have done with this beast since we purchased it in 2012

Part of me wonders if they changed the head gasket when they put the different head on.

Long time ago 1 garage did the injector seals .. while trying to fix a bad starting issue I asked anothe grage ( within the last year) to change injector seals ... all the bolts holding the rocker shaft on sheared!

At this point as i had a spare 10p engine in the garage ( as you do) 2nd garage replaced the head with the one from that engine.

Holy Moses that gasket is appalling

and an HSS drill bit? are you kidding?

Canb clearly see hss 8mm on one of them. The other one fell out of the head when I took the head off, was sitting on no 1 piston

2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Chawton White

Demonstrates again, when you own a defender, learn and do as much of the work yourself. Unless you are really sure your garage is good, most just swap out simple parts.
