Retrofit technologies for ULEZ compliance?
Hi all,

ULEZ is coming to my area.

From the TFL website:

Quote:
Vehicles with retrofit technologies or built to a higher standard than mandatory at the time ('early adopters') may meet the emissions standards. Register with us if you believe that’s the case. Until then you need to pay to drive within the ULEZ. Some modified or specially constructed vehicles qualify for a 100% discount from ULEZ charges if registered to someone in the business of a travelling showman.

Appreciate any thoughts on modifications (other than changing the engine) I could make to my 2016 Puma 2.2 in order to meet the new standards please?

Thank you!

Kind Regards APK

Modification, fit coloured fairy lights to the roof.
Carry some goldfish bowls, ping-pong balls, an air rifle and a pack of playing cards.
That should do it. Whistle

I'm able to fit the conversion kits - to make your 2.2 ULEZ compliant, however it is £6300 + vat fully fitted.

Changing the engine doesn't make a difference, unless its type approved convertion.

^ In that vein how to some of the aftermaket tuners like Outlander, Makher and Twisted etc do it with their LT4 and 2.3 litre ecoboost options? Do they have to go through an IVA, I thought you could change to a type approved engine and submit the details via your V5.

An engine is only type approved in its orignal application with an exact list of fitted parts. And actually the engine only forms part of the whole vehicle type approval.

If you fit a BMW engine for example that is EU6, but you then cut the exhaust and put the DPF 6 inches away from where it orignally was, its no longer the exhaust specification that was tested and approved during the emissions approval - which was listed in the documents supplied to the authorities.

I've spent a lot of time with working with the VCA, Thai, Indian and American approval agencies in a previous role.

As far as I was aware, it is only JE that have an approved retrofit engine converion with the 2.3 Ecoboost, although I'm not sure the way they have done it won't cause them issues further down the line. It wouldn't surprise me if the Twisted 2.3 kit is actually the JE engineering conversion (a lot of their V8 conversions were done by another company in Coventry)

My plan has always been to finish my 5.0 Coyote engine converions and go through the full retro process with a proper BOM/parts list - so every thing is done correctly, not a one off conversion. Hence why it's taken me so long to have everything drawn up properly. IRB

jomara, Porny

Many thanks for your comments. Going through the links and website. Thumbs Up

Porny

May I know if yours is an AdBlue solution and does the price include dealing with/notifying TFL etc?
How long does it take to install? Thanks

^ I may be wrong then - it does look like their air con set up is different. Just surprised they've gone through the cost of all the emssissions compliance testing for exactly the same engine. IRB

And the so called mayor has already said that they have a date where the cameras wont generate enough revenue then they will be switched over to pay by mile.

It transpired recently that the cameras were specced and ordered prior to any consultation.

You can spend £1m to update your vehicle but that goal post will keep moving until every Londoner is on a bus or a horse.

Hopefully the retrofit tech gets cheaper and/or synthetic fuels become the norm Smile
