200tdi front wheel bearing issues
Evening all

Having issues with front wheel bearings.

Rebuilt front axle
This issue is on both sides all round play off about 3/4mm
Has new Timkin bearings and new hubs. Have checked part no too make sure there right.
Even after I’ve tightened first locknut after seating everything I still have large amounts off play. I’ve put the thrust washer on before locknut it’s almost like I need another washer so the whole hub seats further back.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks in advance

Hi Pike. What era front axle do you have? Does your vehicle have a spacer between the bearings?

What state is the stub axle in? Sounds like the bearings are getting wedged on something.

Forgot too mention I’ve reused an old stub axle on one side and have a new stub axle on the other side
So don’t think there’s an issue with stubs

Yeah it would seem something is holding it of 2/3 mm just needs too go on a little further. I’ve got a oil seal on the inner hub could that hold it off at all

IIRC there should be a thick washer between the outer bearing and the first nut.

Edit: I just re read your first post, and missed that you said that you put the thrust washer. That is what I was referring to.

You mention that you changed the hubs. Could you have got later Defender hubs? I read somewhere that on later Defender hubs, the bearings are closer together, which would explain your 'play'. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi Dinnu it did cross my mind. I did buy pre 93 hubs frc6139. Wish I didn’t chuck my old ones so I could compare. Built these axles up about a year ago soo chucked most of the old stuff

I wonder if you’ve any pics of the seals when you fitted them?

I once had to have a garage fit some new wheel bearings for me when I was away from home. The job didn’t last more than a few days before I had to take them off and do them again. He had fitted the body of the seal ‘flush’ with the back of the hub, but it needs to be recessed 3 or 4mm.

Apologies if this is too basic/obvious. No offence intended. Donald

The usual trick is to use the drive flange as a drift to tap the seal in. Place the side of the flange that usually contacts the hub against the seal, and then tap the centre of the other side to drift the seal in. The locating lip on the drive flange is the correct thickness to inset the seal the right distance.

Cheers for all the responses. Turned out they were the wrong hubs, new ones I got, all though they look the same, from where the inner race too the back of hub was around 7mm shorter. Possibly got sent later style, not soo sure. Learnt my lesson too check with your old stuff before fitting

About the OP problem, I now remember that the earlier larger drive members do not fit the later hubs (although I do not remember exactly which is the larger diameter). Would be a good check to know if you have the correct hubs or not.
