Galvanised Chassis and Towbar issue
Hi,

I have a 200tdi running an unknown galv'd chassis. From what information I can find it seems likely to be a Puma or TD5 Marsland.

I purchase a Masia NAS rear step, all going well until I need to fit the underslung brace brackets to which I found myself quite perplexed. It doesn't fit, after googling, it seems a common issue but no one has a definitive fix.

I believe I need the pictured bracket and wondered if anyone can shed light on what the part number is or where I can obtain one?

Thanks,

D

The bracket you have highlighted is part of a 90 td5 heavy duty adjustable tow bar, not a part that is available on its own as far as I know

erm. Well thats not good news. Do you have any suggestions on a potential fix, the NAS step doesnt mention any such issues with various models and provided a number of different bars, but the angle is too short.

It seems to be an issue with the galv'd chassis but I could be wrong.

This is what i have.

The bracket in the photo is indeed part of a Td5/Tdci 90 towbar, and it is attached to the tank cradle mounts which are part of the Td5/Tdci chassis.

If your chassis was made for a 200Tdi then it will not have the tank cradle mounts, and instead will have two smaller mounts on the chassis rails which the towbar should pick up on. These are in a different position and so need different shaped brace arms.

The step is sold as fitting all vehicles 1984-2016 so presumably they supply different brace arms to allow you to fit it to different vehicles?

Can you put up a picture of the back end of your chassis and what you have been given?

No problem. Thanks.

Heres what I have.

I can't angle them up more due to hitting the angle.

Okay so your chassis looks to have the remains of the tank brackets on it but they have been cut off where they protrude below the chassis.

I assume it’s a 90? Sadly you do not have the earlier type (pre-Td5) towbar brackets either, which may be an issue as a 90 always needs brackets for a towbar to fit. On 110s the brace arms bolt straight to the chassis rails.

The second type of arm in your photos, which has the crank on the chassis end, is for 110s and pre-Td5 90s. It would bolt either direct to the chassis rail on a 110 or to a small bracket on a 90 - missing on yours.

You can buy the Td5/Tdci tank brackets and weld them on, I did this to convert my chassis to take the later rear tank. The non-cranked brace arms with the slotted holes in the chassis end would then bolt up to those.

These are the brackets fitted to pre-Td5 90 chassis. Your double-cranked arms would in theory bolt up to these.

I think this answers the questions then, thanks. It is a 90, unsure of exact chassis but suspected td5 or puma.

Would these be the right part then?

Yeah I'm already in for £500 on the step, hoping I can find a decent non-custom solution. I'm not a fabricator lol.

Hopefully yes. Does the end of the cranked arm line up roughly with the inside face of the chassis rail?.

It looks to for me, just needs the drop. I suspect if the 90 degree angle on the step wasn't there it would be able to angle up and fit direct to chassis, but I suspect this strengthening angle isn't just for fancy, so I left the grinder in its toolbox.

I'll order a set of these then, offer them up and see if they fix the problem.

For future reference to anyone else having this issue, these are the items I'm buying "Rear Anti Roll Bar & Tow Bar Brackets Defender 90", part no:LR511RH/LH

shame you have to damage the galvanizing at what is a critical spot for rust control. Make sure you use plenty of rust proofing on completion. Plenty of ideas about that on this forum

Thanks. I'll do some research.

Father in law hopefully can help with this too as its his profession.

Are you planning to use the nas step as a tow bar or more for looks?

If you are using it for looks/as a step and aren’t planning on towing then before you start welding to your galv chassis, I would probably be considering making some new stays to go to the hole circled and put a crush tube in through the wiring harness hole.
