So you were getting the same FRP from the sensor whether or not the sensor was connected?

Does that not tell you something?

I guess it does; but what and how does it help comes to mind.

I assume it means the sensor isn't working and hence whether plugged in or unplugged the fuel 'monitoring' or flow valve on the fuel injection pump assumes there's enough pressure in the system and hence doesn't open?

Am I right?

It suggests to me that you're not actually getting a reading from the sensor at all, and either the engine harness or ECM is defective.

No because the reading is the same if you disconnect the sensor. If you've changed the ECM the next thing I would do is check the harness for open circuit or short circuit faults, or ground faults.

Thanks everyone for your comments so far.

I am amending some information as I inadvertently put some incorrect information in.

blackwolf: THE SETTING IN THE ECM SHOWS A VALUE OF 38125KPA - a max default on the system.

BUT when cranking we were getting variable values between 0-40000 kPa. That value is low and proved out by when we open an injector pipe there seems very low pressure.

We disconnected the wires to the back of the fuel pump; no difference on pressure readings.

We seem to have very little fuel at the injector pipes; it kind of bubbles out but no 'squirting' or 'spraying' so think we are not getting enough fuel to the injectors.

Summary
We are running out of ideas and patience; we still have some suspicion that the immobiliser (which has been checked/programmed and synchronised) is stopping fuel getting into the engine - i.e. it still hasn't sent the right information to the ECM/ECU to permit the engine to start. We know the engine itself works - we used a low level of ether and fired her up. It ran well.........but it wasn't enough to enable it to run on diesel...........

We have changed the Fuel Pressure Rail Sensor - car didn't star.

Our last attempt to resolve this is to remove the immobiliser/ECU/speedo and refit ones from a donor vehicle.

Remember we have changed a lot of items on the car, these are all fuel related / sensors that control that aspect. And still no joy.

HAS ANYONE ON THE FORUM EVER HAD ISSUES LIKE THIS? WE APPRECIATE ANY HELP WE CAN GET; THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT IS WE DON'T SEEM TO HAVE ENOUGH FUEL AT ENOUGH PRESSURE TO GET THE CAR RUNNING.

WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD BANK 1 AND BANK 2 PRESSURE FAULTS SHOWING - EVEN IN THE EARLY DAYS WHEN THE CAR WAS RUNNING. ANY CLUES ON THOSE PERMANENT FAULTS?

I’m not going to be as diplomatic as Mr blackwolf here- Without sounding harsh here I’d take it to different garage, look up a diesel specialist near you and someone that has trained on working on common rail systems. I cannot understand why you’d change all of those parts without running any tests sorry, but you are throwing parts and money at it and hoping. That’s from a diesel mechanic of 23 years Whistle

Sadly not sorted. We've had 3 mechanics on it, since end of Feb, without much luck.

Some good news! The car was dropped at the LR Dealership yesterday. They made some "Software updates" to the ECU and Immo and it fired up first time after those. The ECU error codes are also completely gone.

Now to get it MOT'd.

MOT done now and we are moving forward.

Thanks to everyone for your comments - the initial thoughts around immobiliser issues have in the end been central to our issues.

It does beg the question though of when you are a Landrover owner, of an out of warranty vehicle, how do you get notification of updates that are needed to maintain the health and performance of your vehicle.

That aside we are delighted to have joined the hundreds of fans for Landy's and are very much looking forward to many years of exciting journeys ahead in our 110.

Land Rover has a solution for that: buy a new Land Rover.

I have an Disco 4 and using a GAP diagnostics tool you can update the (17 odd) computers, so I assume that LR needs to make these updates available to the market and GAP has access to that information. They also recommend to leave the ECUs well alone and only update if there is a problem which might (or might not) be fixed with an update.

Most independents will have a four figure £ subscription to Land Rover with software updates, companies like Opus/autologic provide them also which can be a better solution as they can do it remotely and have a tech helpline with some very smart folk on the other end which of course comes with a hefty yearly subscription too.

For the newer stuff you’d use a tool called Pathfinder with Doip VCI (others available)
