old man emu shocks with standard spring?
hello folks, sorry if this is long post that could be shorter ..........

i'm looking to replace the shocks on my 110csw td5 and have kinda decided that ill go down the OME route as i want a compliant ride that i can use off road too. i've been searching on here and found loads of useful information but not quite what i was hoping to find to answer my question.

I have nearly new set of standard spring sitting in the garage so from a cost point of view id like to use them first of all and if needed i'll upgrade the springs to ome later as funds permit. Is it OK to use ome 60039 shocks with standard springs? the old koni shocks that are on the 110 are past it and in a horrible state so they are going for sure.

now after looking at an ome catalog i decided on the 60039 as i have drawers, a leisure battery along with the usual collection of "other stuff" in the boot and a water tank in one rear quarter wing, and an extra fuel tank in the other. so i'm carrying extra weight most of the time.

so for the rear i have found out that 60039 are 560mm open, 346mm closed

and from here http://www.bilashakaflowers.com/LandroverShocks.htm
it says standards are open 21.7inch (551mm) and closed 13.8inch (350.5mm).

Am i correct to assume i don't need to do anything else to run these shock? as i'm talking mm's of a difference than i assume brake lines, bump stops are fine and there is no chance of the spring dislocating.

BUT (with the ome springs) the catalog suggests that this will give a 55mm lift approx.......
i'm not after a lift as i don't need one and the car doesn't have any anti roll bars so standard height suits me, am i missing something.

thanks for any advice / clarity you folks can provide.

I think you will be fine to run the OME that you wish to have.

Lift is mostly springs, not shocks.

If worried, just fit some dislocation cones, they are cheap and easy to fit. Although swapping out rear springs is pretty easy too.

If you plan to go to OME springs later you may want to find out IF they do standard height springs, which I think they don’t. So if swapping later to OME springs may involve changing dampers again, or fitting dampers that can accommodate the extra 25mm now.

If unsure I would ask Gwyn Lewis who is very much in the know about these things.

I’ve just fitted OME rear shocks to mine, fronts to come, and whilst I haven’t used Land Rover springs I have used Flatdog standard height springs and the ride is so much better than before. I got mine from Gwyn Lewis and they’re pin to pin and part of their Adventurer setup which cover a range of -1 to +2 height difference via whatever length springs you put on. You will have to change the top mounts and knock the cups for the bush off but it’s not a big job.

I run OME dampers with factory LR springs on my 110 (HD fronts and military wolf 110's on the rear, as it's a lardy old bus) and it handles really well.

My old 90 also had OME's with factory springs. again no issues.

Cool, thanks for the input folks, really appreciate it. Looks like it's all coming together.

As far as I can gather the shocks are the same up to a 2 inch lift, that's what confused me a little as I thought the shock length would change

Stressed coma, what your reason for going pin pin shocks? I saw them on gwyns site but I thought it was only for long travel as the eye could restrict things at more extreme angles.

LandyAndy I'd only go for lifted springs if needed But it's a fair point that I should check, hopefully my "new" springs are up to the job.

Not sure where you im buying from at the moment, torn between my local landy specialist (if he can get them) or Gwyn lewis, or other online supplier, as I've got to be sensible with my pennies. I know gw gets great reviews but I wouldn't feel right getting his advice then buying local.... I'll need to see.

Slowly inching closer to buying some nice parts. 👍🏻

I’ve got pin to pin OME dampers, and standards springs. It’s very sure footed now ( for a Defender) and the ride is ok.
I put spring isolators on and some 6mm packing on the rear. It’s sits about 15-20mm higher.
It was all from gywn Lewis
For an all round Defender I would consider it the perfect set up.
For a purely road going Defender I’d use Alive comfort springs, and Fox Dampers.

I did it for reliability and ease of maintenance. Much easier to slide them bushes off and fit new ones than try press some out and back in on the drive!
