Depends on how large you are.
I've got some (from memory might be 3mm) on the wings because I tend to stand on them a lot chopping branches and doing stupid stuff. Prior to fitting them I was bending the thin wings, bearing in mind a Tdi probably has stronger wings than the later stuff based off the ripples I've seen in panels in brand new vehicles in dealership showrooms. The only regret associated with chequer plate is fitting it.
Especially too much of it, and in any place other than wing tops.  |

Hi Edward, you will find it’s a “Marmite” subject on here, some love, some hate, but mostly it’s an atheistic’s thing. Well except fitting it to the rear crossmember where most think it’s wrong.
If you are fitting go for 3mm. Mammoth is generally seen as well made, accurate, and is bolt on, which really helps when you will need to remove to refurbish. There is also a chance detritus will get between the body panel and the chequer plate which could cause corrosion, so cleaning the panel and waxing well before fitting will help. I don’t have a lot but do remove every couple of years to clean and re wax panel underneath. Guess that’s my OCD 
The key point to note is once done you have holes in the panels you have covered, so expensive to go back. Hence really think about where you are going to fit it, then temp fit with low tack tape to see if you will really like the look long term before fitting as well. |

Just about acceptable on wingtops, but an abomination everywhere else😂
Like an early comment said it’s very marmite. I hate marmite and chequerplate. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop |
