Which ones 265 or 285?
Hi
I have a 2008 90 CSW on boost alloys and I'm unsure which ones to go for.
Looking at the Bf goodrich mud terrain in either 265/75/16 or 285/75/16.
Would I require spacers with the 285's and would they catch?
Also where's the best place to buy them?

Dan, since you are based in West Yorkshire give Tony a ring at Four Plus 4 in Leeds. If you find a better price elsewhere it is always possible to discuss prices with Tony. They are a good garage to know Thumbs Up

Tyre sizes are always a recurring question.

It really depends what YOU want to achieve. Looks, max ground clearance etc

Spacers are basically banned for MSA events like one of your local club RTV's events (Take a look at Yorkshire Off Road Club website , shameless plug there Razz )

For maximum ground clearance the 285/75/16 will give you more then the 265/75/16. We run on 255/85/16 BFG M/Ts and like that size of tyre and tread. The 255/85 is just that bit taller then 265/75

Turning circle is controlled by a mixture of wheel offset, tyre diameter and tyre width.

Ho humm, happy decision making. At least you have made a good choice of tyre.

I have 265/75/16 BFG AT's on boost alloys. Went this route as they are the same rolling radius as original 235/85/16, but were a little wider. I had to alter the stops to stop the new tyres rubbing on the radial arms, but didn't need to get the speedo adjusted due to the same radius. Turning circle is not as good but was never brilliant anyway.

The proper max size for boost is 265 I know of people who have gone to 285 on a boost but in real terms it's a no no

Had 285's on my 90 (pics in my gallery).....I thought they looked good, and did everything I asked of them. Didn't rub at all either. Although as Ken says, probably just a bit too big for the standard rims really. Happy with mine though....will probably go for 265's when I'm ready to change this time though.

I'm going for 285s but on a 8.5 rim also the cheapest place to get them from is camskill cheapest by far although you have to get them fitted but most tyres company's will charge any a tenner to change a tyre for you

As a compromise it's got to be 255s, certainly my next tyre choice.

Having had 265s I say there's too much "float" over mud certainly didn't feel like there was much grip or directional control though this is in part down to them being ATs, 235s that I have now sink down more easily and grip better into the harder lower ground, but at a cost of tyre diameter. 255/85 is the best compromise. 285 is just if you want a certain look, in my opinion. It's like having the white letters showing on BFGs, a matter of taste. Anything you can do, I can do slower and less efficiently.

im going to be using mine as road tyres to be honest so yer more for show and they have to fill the arches with the 2 inch lift
its so i dont kill my simex all the time
so 285s on 8.5j rims Whistle

Look at farmer's Defender - they all have steels with skinny rubber.

Our current loaner has large (not actually sure the width) Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs and they are VERY noisy at 45-60ish. Definitely great in mud but a bit of a PITA on road.

IMO LRs OEM choices of GG TRs and now Contis are both great allrounders. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
