Propshaft Safety
From time to time, I do some really dumb things but, this morning was positively dangerous.

when you change your rear propshaft (on my 90)

1. chock you vehicle
2. put it in low range and lock the xfer box
3. put it in gear
4. have someone to help you

this morning, i though it would be straight forward task to change the rear prop. i even have the propshaft extension socket to make the job easier but ended up nearly killing myself. took off all the bolts and removed prop - the car started to move... the hand brake works on the rear prop, take off the rear prop - NO HAND BRAKE. Luckily I am here to tell the tale but it did frighten me somewhat.

please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that with the centre diff locked the hand brake works on both axels, could it be that the diff lock wasnt in, was the light on?

You are correct. With diff lock engaged and hand brake, the defender will not move with no rear prop. Puma 110 SW

I did not know that, so the drum transmission brake works on the output shaft of the xfer box and with the xfer box locked this would in effect lock the transmission and stop the vehicle from moving.

i must admit as soon as the vehicle started to move I knew immediatelty what was wrong - just a bit late.

i think chocking the wheels is also a sensible thing to do when working on the transmission.
