You pretty much nailed it buddy, lay across the engine and use a stubby spanner. Some members of this parish have moved the ECM to free up some more space.
If you're going to use the lay across the engine method, be aware of the bonnet stay catch and the PAS bottle cap junk-wise.

Get yourself a little stool to stand on next to the wing and lean in...

If you are replacing the existing sensor and have no intention of reusing it then disconnect the plug/connector then snip the wire off the back of the sensor. This will let you get a ring spanner on the sensor with ease by feeling it on with your hand down the back of the engine. It is only about 3 inches down. Crack the thread free with the spanner then spin it out the rest of the way with your fingers. Spin the new one in and nip it up with the open end of the spanner. Reconnect the plug.

Yeah, the 10 minute thing includes making a cup of tea, the longest bit for me was finding my short spanners! Oh woe, oh woe
