Hand brake light: flicker party
Folks,

I have to say, despite all rumors: my Defender has been very robust and reliable, as we're approaching 120,000 miles now. It was clearly the right choice to get one and I still love the old tin box a lot.

With higher mileage though, some gremlins are appearing. The latest is my handbrake warning light. Whenever I drive at an angle downhill, it starts to light up and flickers to my great annoyance.

My question for those who have some insight into the inner workings of the hand brake:

How does the handbrake mechanism work? Could driving at an angle affect a disengaged handbrake? Or is there a peculiarity of the sensor that might explain it?

Thanks - and the very best driving to you all!

It is also the brake fluid level warning light.

Oh - thanks!

Looks like a trip to the workshop, albeit not under its own power.

It's probably nothing to worry about, just top up the brake fluid.

As the pads wear the fluid level in the reservoir drops a little. The sensor in the cap is very sensitive and when you go downhill or brake the fluid moves to the front of the reservoir away from the sensor, and of course braking lowers it more.

On my Def to prevent the effect you describe I need to keep the fluid level at the bottom of the reservoir neck, well above the "min" mark.

I had corroded brake pipe which caused that problem. Check the level.
