2.2 Tdci defender 90 - no service history!!
I am looking at a 2012 defender with approx 45,000 miles.

One owner up until approx 12 months ago and then simply had little use with owner 2 who is in his late 60’s who has had one service and had it SORN for approx 8 months.

All the online not’s show approx 4k miles per annum, as if it did the same trips on the same days.

The original main dealer acknowledges the sale and confirms NO main dealer service details on their system.

Due to various computer system upgrades they are unable to find the original invoice and/or owner details.

So my question is does anyone know how to trace the original owner or try (the impossible) to find an independent service history?

The V5 should provide the current and previous owner, but apart from that I am not aware of any legit way to do this.

Does it matter? Is a service history important?

It is an extremely low mileage vehicle which cuts both ways - Defenders don't really like not being used - but if the condition matches the mileage and the price is right for you, I don't see that the service history matters a jot.

The total mileage on that vehicle is about the same as my 2007 Defender had done by its first birthday, by which time it had had one dealer service and three replacement clutches (the early Puma clutch was really quite special in terms of defectiveness and inadequacy).

Agree with Blackwolf, the condition is most important.

You can use the lack of service data as a negotiation? Have a look how clean the oil is, maybe the cleanliness of the air filter? Swing the "door" open and see if the fuel filter looks new-ish? I'm sure you can make an educated guess as to the work done? A bit of Sherlock Holmes needed Smile

You could always pop the registration number on here and see if someone has knowledge of the vehicle???

As usual, do a full HPI check - sometimes that shows up useful info??

Mine's been home serviced since the warranty expired 10 years ago, and been very well serviced! Only the best for my Defender Smile Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Thanks for the replies, I know the V5 gives the number of owners and the current owner.

Does it give the previous owner name and address as well?

The current V5 registered to the current keeper will have the previous owners details, but if your buying from a dealer they might not be very keen for you to see that. Official secrets act, sorry i mean GDPR, wil be their reason. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

I'd agree. Condition is the key. 12 months back I bought a 2012 110 XS off the 2nd owners who'd had it for 10 years (main dealer demo for 6 months, then them). But there was only one main dealer service then a load of local specialists. Some of the invoices were pretty poor by my standards so who knows how/if the work was actually done? However, the condition of the car was really good and the rest is history.

If you are not knowledgeable then suggest to take it to be independently checked. If they're genuine then they should be open to that. If all checks out then haggle for a sensible price given no docs.

It is an interesting one. I guess if the vehicle is anywhere between 0.1 and 5 years old then I would expect there to be dealer invoices, but anywhere post that it really wouldn't bother me in the slightest if there was paperwork or not. When it comes to Land Rovers, as other have said, it really comes down to knowing what you are looking at and accepting the vehicle in front of you for what it is and what it could be under your tenure.

As long as I am happy with the overall condition of the vehicle I know that there will be things that will need doing when I get it home, such as servicing, coolant flushing and timing belts. I am happy in that knowledge.

I have no qualms taking a jack with me and checking wheel bearings or diff lock or crawling underneath to get a look at the chassis etc. I couldn't give two figs about what is bolted on to the vehicle, it is very much down to how the chassis, bulkhead etc are, everything else is just window dressing.

I would take a good condition and caring owner over any service maintenance record.

Garages are on the clock and plenty make money by cutting corners. Many issues i find on cars i own(ed) involve someone having been in there before me, supposedly serviced etc.

Clutch changed with invoice, half the bolts missing, stuff like that.

Same here, and that type of ownership is the best to buy from Thumbs Up 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

The trouble with defenders is that they are very easy to clock. Service history would give an additional check of the mileage and could be compared to that provided on the MOT.

Agree that the truck can be/should be considered "as is" and easily checked for condition, but is there any reason for Owner 2 simply not saying: " I bought it from... [Owner 1]"?

I didn’t buy it, been resprayed so I think it could either be genuine or hiding something …

On the look out for any 2.2tdci 2012 onwards, anything considered

Not wanting to re-start the age old argument about what's best (2.4. or 2.2)... But... Any reason why you specifically want 2.2 over a late 2.4 ??? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)
