I doubt it. I suspect it is up to the discretion of the fleet manager. Unfortunately. However, fitting a tracker to some vehicles and not others is a sure fire way to breed discontent amongst the workforce and strictly as a management thing if you are hoping for better management of the fleet then knowing what the entire fleet is doing is the only way to do it.

What is the other vehicle? If its a pool car then (not a commercial) then they need to be keeping exacting mileage logs or they could be falling foul of BIK.

The other is a luton van we just use for deliveries. no "cars" as such on the fleet, all vans, and no one has signed with the HMRC to use them privately.

The short of it all is that it is perfectly legal for a company to track their vehicles, but the data cannot be used to penalise the employee at all. |

It looks like the employer can choose what vehicles they track I am afraid.

the long and short of it is they can fit whatever they want to whatever vehicle they want.
ideally it should be to improve whatever aspects the business feels is lacking or maybe just asset tracking like plant on building sites. to do it right they should talk their staff thru it and what they hope to achieve from it. how the data it gathers is used is subject to data protection laws etc etc. covert trackers are allowed if there is a good reason. eg some lads at a local firm where using gps tracker blockers which where causing issues with the vans themselves thus allowing them off route and to use the vans at night (no private use allowed) the lads denied it but were caught out. im sure you can guess how that ended up for the guilty ones and yes they were stealing goods as well. most of our local couriers now have in cab cameras (with sound)to record the driver when driving to stop phone use , smoking in cabs etc. none of them where happy and quite a few left over it but the cameras have stayed. |

The company I worked for had them as standard for the last few years. Came in handy when I had a breakdown and I was trying to explain where I was! It can be checked if you have an accident as it will show your speed etc at the time of the accident. Never bothered me. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If your company is fitting a tracking device why not work with them and explore the benefits? Ride like you stole it!!

I'd speak to the "manager" fitting them to ask the reason why? If it's to catch people out then it should be across the board.
It could be for insurance purposes? You can usually get a discount for having trackers fitted along with cameras. I'd get your H&S rep involved, I'm sure he could do with the work 110 D250 SE HT

Pretty rare for any sizeable fleet to not have trackers on these days.
Implemented properly there are benefits to the users, not having to fill out forms or drivers logs to justify personal/business use is the main one. |
