Mini cooper d clutch
Has anyone successfully replaced a mini cooper d clutch, on the driveway? My daughters mini has unfortunately had to be picked up by the RAC. It needs a new clutch. Looking online it seems it's a horrible long job and because of its age (2011) its uneconomical to repair, but I'm thinking that I could do it. I'm not sure if it will be worth it, I recon it needs the clutch fork, don't know anything about the dual mass flywheel and presumably a clutch kit. It would be to sell afterwards to get more than scrap value. Any thoughts anyone? Thanks.

I don't know where you have looked on line but my search online suggests approx 6 hours labour. Have you put your question to one of the Mini forums? Defender 90XS SW

In short, no. I've read 6 to 10 hours, so probably double that in the yard. It would seem that the parts could well be over £800 if the dual mass flywheel is broken, but I've never seen one, so don't know the likelihood of that. From the symptoms given it sounds like most probably it's a broken clutch fork. I'm still pondering....

If it’s only scrap value then you might as well start the job, and see if it worth continuing. A good insight for you is you can get a description of the failure from the driver. So should know if DMF or not.

BMW n47. I'm not too worried about doing it as such, more the economics of it. Looks like it could cost £800 in parts if the dmf is broken, which reading on line it may well be, it's done about 110k I think. Also read that the timing chains break. I doubt that it would be worth £1200 running and then sods law dictates the timing chain would break after the clutch repair.

Ah! BMW n47!

I have a beemer with that engine and (I knew this when I bought it), this is an engine with problems (or not). The timing chain can fail and it is located at the flywheel side. Obviously A LOT don't fail, but it has given the engine a poor reputation, but more annoyingly to inspect it you need to remove the flywheel and the cover.

SOOO when you are there it makes sense to at least inspect, which then makes the job even more involved. Or you can ignore it, not an easy thing for a person that knows about cars.

Supposedly the issue can be detected with a rattle at startup (not easy on a diesel). Lots of scare mongering going on on the internet of course and we are all doomed.

BTW my Beemer is just fine, lovely engine and very economical. But the rear main seal started leaking and I just keep topping up every 3 months, pondering if I should do the surgery or not.

At least in France cars have a value so they don't end up on the crap heap for bold tires etc.

That's interesting, the history of the car is that it was purchased second hand by us at about 60k, supposedly with a new clutch. Its always rattled on starting, then goes away. Returns good mpg and goes well, but a horrid little thing in my opinion. My wife loved it, I hated it. Then it was passed on to my daughter, she likes it presumably. Now at 110k ish, and pretty much value less. It's also had advisorys on the mot for rear sub frame corrosion, which does look nasty, especially when compared to my other daughter's 18 year old fiat panda.

I think the plan is to lend her my clk, then find something else, perhaps another panda! I like them too, more old fashioned. She's saving for a house, so doesn't want to spend money on cars you see.
