TD5 battery spec
Hi all

Does anyone know the battery spec for a TD5? No winch or other high power consuming ancillaries.

Question, is a 90ah 800A sufficient?

The standard battery is a 640 or a 664. Both of these are 105Ah. First is a 780CCA and the second a 680Ah.

Are you planning a dual batter setup in the future as this would be a good chance to do it.

No dual set up needed.

Was hoping 90ah would be sufficient as £50 cheaper but will go for 105/110Ah.

No problem. The Ah are not as important as the CCA, if your 90Ah has decent CCA then you'd get away with that.

Time for a new battery in my 110 TD5.

I think a factory recommended battery is 110 Ah, CCA 800A.

Is Varta Silver Dynamic H3 (100 Ah, CCA 830A) a good choice? I would go for Varta Silver Dynamic I1 (110 Ah, CCA 920A), but I am afraid it wont fit as it is 393 mm long... Has anyone fitted a battery of this size?

Battery size/spec is not as critical as say a tire size. They also deteriorate over time so what you are buying is reserve capacity above the bare minimum required to start the engine on a good day.

The bigger the battery the more reserve you have which means typically as the performance degrades over time it still works during say cold weather or for long cranking.

Some batteries are cheaper just because they are a common size and stocked in large volumes, it could be worth searching around a little to get the most bang for your buck.

Ultimately it needs to fit (also watch the height to avoid shorting out the positive terminal) and the terminals need to be on the correct location and of the correct size. Last time I had to buy a battery I just went to the wallmart with a tape measure and bought the cheapest biggest battery I could find.

Edit: Currently I have locked on to the Varta G14 battery 95Ah 850CCA 153x175x190, mainly because I have good experience with Varta and it fits my Disco 4 so I can keep a good old one spare for 2 cars (3 if I add the S3)

I have 2 batteries under the passenger seat, can’t for the life of me remember what size the engine one is and my defender isn’t at home currently so I can’t take a look but it’s considerably smaller than standard but as long as the CCA is up to standard the actual capacity isn’t overly important.

Personally wouldn't bother with 2 batteries, don't really know why people go for 2. Almost everyone I've know with multiple batteries has had issues.

Just go for the biggest battery you can fit in the tray. Local agri place should have something suitable.

Well I am not one of them. I have been running twin batteries in Defenders for a many years as I have had Defenders. No problems with it at all. The reason is simple. Back-up. When I am away from home I like to know that no matter what happens I have one dedicated battery for the engine. The other is simply for accessories, fridge and winch. All of which are not critical, but deserve their own power source. Keeping them separate also makes trouble shooting much easier as the two systems do not interact. It is not for everyone, but it is a tried and tested setup in my case.

I have 2 because one is a leisure battery to power my camper.

i always go for the heavy duty variant of what's on, just for the extra starting power and insurance
