Someone has done it to jazz up the appearance and now it'll be prone to rot Darren

I think they've done it to cover up the rust and bubbling paintwork

I’ve always assumed the excessive use of chequer plate is to conceal existing problems Ride like you stole it!!

I have just paid an expensive paint job to freshen up the bulkhead from about 100+ stone chips that have been not only an eye sore, but potential rust starting points. Checker plate would have been cheaper... but no thanks. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Try these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134140939154?ch...5c8629516f
A colour matched plastic version you could just stuck on with a magnet to prevent stone chip damage i think would be a winner! |

Those areas can get smacked with stones and then get corrosion in.
And CP has its uses for protection in the right places but that isn’t one of them, in fact will encourage the tin worm behind it. That’s how I see it, think of CP as Protectional not aesthetic. But I wouldn’t have it there, nor am I a fan of it on the bonnet either. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧 |
