 2003 Defender 110 Td5 G4 Challenge Tangiers Orange
I’ve used the Defender much as the other cars have been rather demanding. This week, I did manage a couple of little jobs which included fitting the crystal headlamps which seem to have aligned ok but I’ll need an MOT test machine to be sure. I also changed the rear work lamp switch from a knackered old rocker version to an OEM style Mud Stuff type.

I also popped in the USB socket as it’s always handy to have and a pair of their sunvisor storage thingys.

SP Panels supplied some window seals for the alpine glass and the little ones on the rear of the body. These will be done when the rack comes off to allow the roof to be polished and the better rack goes on. I think the windscreen seal is leaking as there’s ingress in the passenger footwell so it may be a good time to upgrade to a heated one.

 2003 Defender 110 Td5 G4 Challenge Tangiers Orange
Last weekend we had the G4 Owners Club Xmas party and attending was the UK competitor Brian Reynolds. He kindly pulled up some period pictures of him driving my Defender as it held the fleet number 1 and was used in selections. This however flagged that my current Mantec raised air intake isn’t correct so PA Blanchards have supplied another, correct, item.

It’s great when old unseen pics emerge of the car.

The issue is that that vehicle was used in both 2003 and 2006 and was fitted with both kits from those years and then had them removed when the vehicle was finally sold. The items put back on it were done by Nene Overland and were a mixture of 2003 and 2006 parts. The vehicle was returned to 2003 spec slowly, and as rare kit was found, but the snorkel was left as a 2006 one as the 2003 ones tend to rust more….. Current

Cheers Stu, I’m sure what Nene Overpriced did was well intended. It’s just once I spot something…..

It’s good to have the option of having her in 03 or 06 trim although the Breed racks are harder to source than the Safety Devices one. I noticed the front plaque is also lade back at an angle but I’ll keep her straight. I’ve not traced her South African number plate yet which would help with identifying her in pics from the archives. The Rangie was easier to spot as the Aussie plates are listed on the db. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

Interesting I didn't know they used different racks in 03 than 06. What is the difference?

I did notice some have 5 feet and others 6 feet.

I suspect the angled rack sign was just for practicalities of dragging boats etc up and down.

Geobloke - Pictures demonstrate the difference better but the 06 Breed rack has a much squarer stance, going pretty much straight up from the gutter. It also has side lashing points and in my opinion a nicer looking rack - rare though. The 03 SD rack tapers in from the gutters.

Thanks for that Joncorry Thumbs Up So similar but quite different. I do not think I have ever seen the Breed rack in person. Just the SD one G4 original or aftermarket.

Even the SD racks can be subtly different. The one currently on mine is wrong for an 03 car as the ladder is mounted incorrectly.

The replacement I have is correct and has two lugs welded on it specifically for the ladder to mount to and the vertical work light mount on the right. Took me a while to spot these but after a long time driving down to, around and back from Morocco following one I did start to notice differences.

I’m currently debating whether or not to chuck a 1.2 TFR box in in case I have to take it to Skye for Xmas! 400 miles in winter in a Defender, should be a fair test of my wife’s patience. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

I managed a trip out to the Wirral yesterday in the 110 and I noticed a bit of a squeal as rpm neared 2K which stopped as a back off the throttle. From some of the Juice Motors YouTube videos, I thought maybe its the spigot bearing/bush (the brass thing) but this noise is a constant speed related screech at motorway speed (I only did 55mph home).
I’m now wondering if I have transfer box woes as it seems to be coming from that area. It’s only under load, will increase and decrease with revs, not tried it in neutral and revving it though.

Maybe best dropping the tfr box fluid and looking for sparkles?

Helpful pointers always welcome.

In other news, the Wipac crystal lights and classic car led bulbs work a treat at night, no flashes from oncoming motorists either! 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

Screeching from spigot bush should only occur when you depress the clutch pedal, as only then there is relative movement between the engine crank and the gearbox input shaft.
Would also rule out a dry thrust bearing, as that should also be noisier when you depress the clutch.

I would check and re grease the prop shaft UJs as my first port of call. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

It’s got a new rear prop as the old UJ’s were very worn. However I will check these and grease, thanks for the pointer 👍 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.
