Lack of power
My wife is complaining about a lack of power with her 300tdi.
It had a 2nd hand turbo fitted a month or so ago by a LR specialist as hers packed in.
It does struggle to get to 70 now, and I don't think it'll go much faster than that. If it gets to a slight incline it'll slow right down.

Could it be a goosed turbo again, or is there something else to Check? 300tdi 90 1996.

It is quite possible the garage that fitted the turbo did not adjust the waste gate properly. Basically the turbo never gets to full boost.

You might have noticed more black smoke upon acceleration.

To adjust this properly you will need a boost gauge and a 10mm spanner.

Just had a quick look, and I think my waste gate may be stuck as I can't move it by hand. Should I be able to do this?
If it is stuck, can I free it off or is it a new one required?
There seems to be a bit of oil near the 6mm pip which goes to the actuator. Does the 6mm rubber pipe carry air, or oil?

Thanks,

Is the whistling new if so may be a hose not properly done up or split. Usually downstream of the turbo. Ed

The actuator has quite a spring attached to it. With a pair of pliers or mole grips clamp on to the non-threaded half of the bar and try to move it. If it seems stiff spray with some light oil and work the lever until it is free. The oil will "burn off" when the turbo gets to temp but the oil will help with the process.

Stuck waste gates are a fairly common problem. Unusual on a new turbo but it could happen I guess.

The whistling noise could be just that your turbo is new and working (sort of) but go around the intake pipes and make sure they are connected to the intercooler/manifold/turbo properly. It is also worth check for splits in the rubber pipes.

Just another thought, or something to check as it happened to me once when I had my 300TDI.

The garage had left a rag in the pipe between the air filter and turbo.

No harm done, I guess they blocked the pipe as a precaution but then forgot to remove it!

Check all air intake hoses. Sounds like one is not fixed correctly. Cheers

Could be a few things.

Lift pump not playing ball?

Hose not on correctly as suggested? the boost reference pipes for the turbo wastegate also deal with the injector pump on boost fueling

just a case of going through it all. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

This would have an effect on the running of the vehicle. Just like a dirty airfilter will stop your vehicle runnung well. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

It'sthe wastegate valve actuator which is goosed.
Does this mean a new turbo is needed, or can it be stripped and freed off/rebuilt?
Any help appreciated. 300tdi 90 1996.

Replaced turbo and wastegate actuator today and it's not made much difference really. Maybe a bit quicker to pick up at speeds below 50, but top end power is still a problem. It takes ages for me to get to 70 and if I encounter a slight gradient it slows down to 60ish. I have no chance of getting it to 85 (defender top speed) unless I'm going down hill 😁

I chose not to replace the manifold (incl wastegate) as I could not work out how to take off the cast iron elbows for cylinders 1 and 4 from my old one, and fit to the new. Does anyone know how to do this?

Could there be another issue with the engine to make the top end speed restricted?

Cheers in advance... R 300tdi 90 1996.
