My gearbox. The update
Long and the short is that I lost reverse about a month ago. The options were to buy a replacement from LR, a used one from one of our kindly forum members or, the one i chose, have it rebuilt.

Before we did this Mills 4X4 tried to replace the detent spring purely and this could be done from inside the vehicle. Worth a crack but it failed. We removed the box and sent it to Ashcroft who turned it around in a couple of days and Mills refitted. Reverse worked fine but didn't always stay engaged. One call to Dave Ashcroft and he immediately sent a courier and has redone the work for free. Both companies have dealt with this pain in the arse situation without question or complaint.

I have suggested that Dave comes onto the forum and talks about what he has found having now rebuilt a number of Puma boxes. In addition he has been trained to do so by Ford -these have to be taken apart using certain strategy and a collection of heat syncs to separate things. As I understand it what he found on mine was that a syncro that would normally be held in place by circlips on any other box was free floating, and even more so with age (40k). He's shimmed this and replaced the reverse drive amongst many other items.

I'd imagine that we are going to see a lot more of these. Luckily Ashcroft are on top of the issues.

Ashcroft are one of the few companies I have heard only good about.

I had them fit a replacement gearbox to the TR90 along with a transfer box upgrade - top quality Thumbs Up

I think Dave does post on here sometimes. John

Indeed - and he is very helpful! He recently posted some useful info about possible future fitting of HD Transit gearboxes. I think I will be in the market for one in a couple of years... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
