It’s probably a bearing that’s in the depths somewhere or something like that.

Hi Pedro - I have the exact same noise in my 2002 Defender with ~200k km. Did you find out what was wrong with the transfer case? I'm wondering if it can be easily repaired or better to get a reconditioned transfer box

Hi dmbueno, the problem was in the gears, not bearings. Three where replaced in the transfer case and the noise disappeared. However, I just heard that the noise is returning, so far only when you lift off the gas pedal. So, beware that the issue might not be easy to permanently fix. I don't know why.

Thank you for the reply - very informative.

I am not totally surprised to learn that it was the gears, since the noise is similar to a gearbox with straight cut gears. So it makes some sense. The gears that were probably not working that smoothly for whatever reason.

What is a little worrying is that he whine is coming back. That, along with your comment that when you replaced the transfer box with another one, you still had the noise. So it might be something structural in these transfer boxes - which is not great. But it is what it is, I guess.

Next question is, would this happen to all of the LT230s? It doesn't seem to be the case. So, what are the reasons why it's only some of them, and not others?

Hard to know I'm sure, but if someone has an idea I'm sure that a lot of us would appreciate knowing.

In my case, I am planning on installing a reconditioned TB. Probably more economical and more reliable at getting rid of the problem than a rebuild.

I wonder if you would have been able to see any abnormality with prussian blue.

As regards transfer cases, there are 2 main ones (excluding the very early type). These are referred to as the LT230 and the LT230Q. Q stands for Quite, and they have the finer teeth (not on low gear). I also consider them as the less strong ones, but in part it could be caused by the fact that the Q were used on tdci engines Defenders. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I thought the LT230Q was specific for and normally fitted to the the Disco 2? For comfort.

I have a Series which had a terrible whine and found that changing the large needle bearings in the intermediate shaft/gear completely cured it. I had thought it was gear (meshing etc) related, but no pure bearing issue. Obviously this is NOT an LT 230 box

My current Td5 defender had a slight whine in the transfer case, quite easy to diagnose in my case because the whine was speed related and the same at 4th or 5th gear (at the same road speed). I could get my hand on a much older and higher mileage transfer case which I knew was quiet (had driven the car) and swapped it out one rainy day. The gears are now completely silent.

Not sure what makes these go noisy, I have not opened my removed transfer case, but I expect like the Series transfer case it I will find worn bearings. Maybe there are good and bad batches of bearings or maybe it is a lubrication issue.

It was introduced with and for the Disco2 but is not exclusive to the Disco2. It wasn't for comfort, it was supposedly quieter. My 2.4 Puma LT230 has the same ratio and internals as the Disco2, although interestingly the casings are not the same, and the reasons for this are very hard to understand.

Interesting that the Q gears in the photo do not have the centre PTO dog, as I recall both my Disco2 gearboxes and all three of my Puma gearboxes do have these.
