Morning all,
Just gathering the bits and bobs for my front wheel brake job next month. Discussed on another thread was ‘things to consider’ and many recommended looking at/cleaning/replacing bearings, plus the various washers and lock nuts etc. However, looking at the parts, it adds up quite quickly, so instinctively I moved over to kits. A single side Britpart Kit (with Timken bearings) is 55€ plus postage from my usual LR parts supplier. However, on another well respected site I can source a full hub for between 73€ and 90€. Brands in order of price are: Ridex (75€) Denckermann (82€) Quinton Hazel (90€) Should I: A. Buy the bearings (Timken?) and reuse my nuts etc? B. Buy a Britpart Timken kit (only full kit I can find)? C. Buy the full hub assembly? If so, which one? Given I’ve done over 110k the idea of some new hubs as I slowly replace wear and tear items seems like a nice idea. However I know little of the brands and I worry that the prices might be ‘too good to be true’? Experts, your thoughts please…. Can’t imagine how the hubs would need replacing out unless there is obvious mechanical/structural damage.
The wheel bearing outer race is technically the only ‘part’ of the hub that would be subject to wear? I’d definitely go for Timken every time, and for the price of nuts, washers etc. I’d replace them too. Of course you may be very surprised that both hub and bearings are in A1 condition - if they’ve been regularly inspected and maintained. A thoroughly good clean and inspection will reveal all - and be thoroughly satisfying!  |

It is very rare that the hub needs replacing. The stub axle on the other hand......
LR should never have deleted the renewable oil seal wear sleeve that was a feature of the early stub axle. |

Be aware that hubs can be different and your wheel will have a matched hub, stub axle, half shaft etc. I would think your hub would have had some serious situation for it to be worn, so either water inside causing corrosion or a bearing failure.
I am not an expert and when refurbing my swivels I considered changing one of my hubs, but decided against it because of the different combinations and my lack of knowledge meaning I could  it up! |
