Hi

Why not start by checking out Ashcroft Transmissions website. They also provide a fitting service. A mate of mine is looking to do this.

My 90 has the Discovery T box fitted by the previous owner. Worth doing.

CWS 4x4 in Glastonbury might be able to supply you a second hand unit if you can do it yourself

Good luck

Mark

So good he said it thrice!

I've just fitted a D2 box to my 90, a few things to bear in mind...

The D2 box didn't have a speedo transducer take off, so the rear housing had to be swapped between the boxes; also the front prop output flange is different so these too were swapped. Not a major hassle but not the straight swap that everyone else claims Wink  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

good route to go down. I bought a 2004 disco 2 box from ebay. Around 200 iirc then had it professionally fitted. Runs like a dream and has done for 3 years since its installation. Prefer it to the gkn overdrive I removed. Are you upgrading the power to cope with the box? Can be sluggish otherwise...

This "needs a remap to cope" is another myth, my untuned Td5 90, which is also on 265 tyres copes absolutely perfectly with the 1.222:1 transfer box.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I have one (a 1.2:1) on my 110. makes the world of difference.

Maybe not so noticable on a 90, but my lardy 110 (SW) needs a bit of ooomph to get it going on steep hillstarts, so i've had it remapped and it goes a lot better now.

If I fit my larger 255/85 tyres, then hillstarts can be a problem, although just slip it into low 2nd, get going and shift up into high range, no problem.

I had Ashcroft swop the ratios on my TR90 - well worth doing. Thumbs Up John

It's not a case of it not coping. I agree that's a myth. But the truck is a bit of a slug and loses the acceleration bite from the standard box gearing. Transforms the vehicle when combined.

Done the same to my Td5 90.

Is yours remapped?

I would advise a good second hand box, or a new one from Land Rover, as opposed to a rebuild or recon. Or you can have miserable time and spend plenty of money, even with the big names.

Pm for more info if you require. As not good to name names or experience.

Sorry to take over the topic, but since I've done my transfer box swap in my tdi, my mate wants to do the same in his tuned td5. Will only t/boxes from Disco 2's fit?

I did my transfer box on my td5, bought the kit from ashcroft, made the truck much much quieter and raised the gearing but not by much. the kit was about £300 and fitting cost over £600 so do the math before jumping in.

if you take the ashcroft one day swap, be aware they will give you a donor t-box because it takes time to do the rebuild... i could be corrected on this - anyone ?

I think any of the boxes fit. Most of the Disco 2 ones did not have CDL, so would be an early Disco 2 anyway.

You are correct BP, and that you will be given a box of unknown origin. If yours is good keep it.
