Difficult to see on those pics, but the seals are definitely knackered. If thee is pitting, or the ball isn’t shined and smooth, which yours look, then they need swapping for new. .

My advice is give the whole area a good clean and monitor.
I’ve seen much worse. Depending on use, you could probably get through winter with a top up of grease. You can change the seal in situ if necessary. Really you need a closer inspection with the wheel off (although you may want to check play with the wheel on). If you do need to change the swivels etc. it’s not such a bad job. You can change the calipers, discs and wheel bearings whilst you’re at it  |

On your first pic, are the horizontal lines on the swivel just grease tracks, or are they scratches on the surface?
Like yourself I had seals that needed replacing, but I was putting it off until I did a bigger job. So I fitted new seals (by careful cutting and rejoining) as a temporary fix. It’s still there, doing its job about 2 years later, but that’s another story! I think this is a recognised military ‘field repair’. I found good instructions and pics somewhere. If you really need to do something, but haven’t the time for the bigger job, then I’d be confident this would get you through the winter. It’s messy right enough, but effective. If you need to replace just the seals and don't want to cut the new ones to fit them, it's not a particularly big job to detach the calipers.and tie them back, then pull the entire swivel hub, still assembled and complete with halfshaft, out of the axle (just as you would to drop the diff). The assembly is heavy, though.
It saves a lot of dismantling and should get you down to about an hour for each side. It is of course no help if your housings also need replacement. |
