Netherlands 2016 Defender 110 Other SW Galway Green
Buy a 4 cylinder or wait for a suitable 6 cylinder diesel?
I have decided to say goodbye to mij 90 2.2 tdci and buy a secondhand “new” Defender 110 diesel (commercial version). Over here in The Netherlands there is not much choice as I do not want a black or white Defender and preferable three seats in the front. There are some nice 4 cylinders on the market but I am not sure to go for one of these.

I have driven in a D200 and it felt quite good (certain compared to my old 90!). However, 6 cylinder and more torque sounds better to me. What to do? Buy a 4 cylinder or wait for the right 6 cylinder? Are these 4 cylinders reliable?

Thanks for any suggestions! 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE

4 cylinder is a decent motor but the 6 cylinder would be my choice now that I’ve owned one, well 2 now.

D200 6 cylinder is good, plenty enough torque and it’s no slouch either. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

My D240 2020 110 First Edition has been 100% reliable mechanically (it’s the other bits that have needed 10 visits to the workshop to fix - leaks and rattles, nothing has fallen off apart from the rubber stop on the fuel filler cover!). Mine is a Feb 2020 early build car that obviously the QC guys needed more training back then. It has plenty of power and torque and is smooth and quiet. I test drove a 4 cylinder D200 and it almost made me ask for my deposit back - it felt underpowered in a 110. The D250 6 cylinder only has 10bhp more BUT a big hike in torque over the D240 - 570Nm compared to 430Nm for the 4 cylinder. 2 weeks ago I was accused of having an electric Defender on an off-road trails day, the D240 was running so quietly compared to all the noisey Pumas and TD5’s needing to rev them hard to get up the same slippery slope the D240 just crawled up at just over idle revs.

I’m looking forward to the delivery of a D250 90 HSE in December, I haven’t even test driven a D250, but have driven a 3ltr D200 which has enough get up and go for most people but is not available at the moment here.

One thing I have found with the D240 is that in 1st and 2nd gears it will hold the revs to 3000/3500 rpm before it shifts up in D, not sure why and when it does hold the revs I manually shift it up to 3rd. I don’t know if the 6 cylinder motors do the same. I have also treated mine to an early oil and filter change at half the recommended interval of 21000 miles / 24 months. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Holding to 3000+rpm seems high.
Under light acceleration my D300 shifts up around 1,750 in the first few gears. Only when I am in a real hurry will it shift above 2,500 rpm. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

I agree with the above

The d240 is fine. I had a 6c d200 for a few days and it was noticeably poor, d250 I was surprised wasn't wildly noticeably better and for some reason the d300 doesn't shift like the d5 with the same engine we have although does 'shift' a bit more I felt cheated it's not as good as our disco (not seems to get the mpg)

When you think of the td5 and puma the d240 isn't that disimmilar engine wise and is a tried engine for the ds and rrs etc, so I would just do it if the car is right, you'll not really see the engine day to day and it will still move etc

The d240 revs a little high due to some of the power bands, did the same in one of the others we had Mike

D200 6 cylinder poor Confused it was perfect on my 90 pulled well. If it was still available it would be the one I’d have, the D250 I have at the moment isn’t worth the extra money over it. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

I had it in a 90

But comparing to a d300 and d240 I would say it was

But the I don’t think the defender has the get up and go the disco has Mike

Deffo the 6 cylinder for me. Drove the 4 cylinder and found it dissappointing.

The 4 cylinder has issues especially if you tow a lot, basically the turbo works too hard and then fails sometimes taking the engine along with it.. I have it on good authority that a lot have been swapped under warranty.

The 3.0 D250 engine is the highlight of my Defender for me. The engine is really smooth in operation, and has fabulous pulling power particularly when towing our caravan.

Im not sure i have heard that tbh, its a very popular engine in the line up and maybe the defender uses them harder, but theres a lot of disco sports and evokes i see towing

But turbo failure in land rovers is hardly uncommon, look at all TDV6/SDV6/TDV8s that have had them, wouldnt surprise me if the 6pot D will have them in a few years, just to keep the theme. At least its not a body off job like the d3/4/sports Mike
