Since the diffs haven't moved with respect to the chassis, the propshaft geometry and propshaft joints won't be affected at all.

I can't find any photos showing the front axle conversion on the website, but provided that the swivel-housing is unbolted from the axle-tube, the portal gearcase is bolted in its place, and then the swivel housing is then attached to the lower end of the portal gearcase, then the relative positions of the wheel and steering joints will also be unaltered and there will be no effect at all on the steering geometry.

There will be an increase in the height of the CoG of the vehicle although the static stability may not be affected much since the track is widened. The roll centre (the height of the CoG above the suspension) will not change, hence there should be no difference in body roll.

There will be a significant increase in the unsprung mass, which will affect roadholding and handling especially at speed on uneven surfaces.

So, overall there will be no change to steering geometry and relatively little change to the handling characteristics - a win/win situation!

What will be affected however is the torque reaction under braking (and to a lesser extent acceleration), i.e., the tendency for the axle to rotate on its mountings when braking. It is hard to tell exactly how much lift the portal conversion gives, but assuming (based on the photos) that it is in the region of 8", there could be an increase in reaction torque of about 50%, which is a significant amount (ie the centre of rotation of the axle is now c.24" from the ground whereas previously it was c.16" from the ground).

The result of this could theoretically be a tendency to shear the axles off the radius arms and/or bend the radius arms if the elastic limits of the bolts and/or radius arms are exceeded.

That being said, this appears to be a top-quality product and is clearly TUV approved and CE marked. It follows therefore that the manufacturers must have done the necessary design calculations and testing to ensure that this is not a problem.

Nice looking truck, portals are great!

Unimog have been using them since the 50's.

This is the Mog I had until recently and had 21inches clearance under the diff
