Snow Chains for 285/75/16 MT's
Hi all,

I have pressed search and i have googled and i have read lots of info.. all very useful but a little inconclusive!

I run a defender 300tdi with 5" lift, 285 75 MT's and 2 lockers - so chains are more handy after a few days and we have the polished stuff to get around on.

For a few reasons this year (mostly ice related and the roads where i now live) i would like the option of chains for my defender... it seems i can get some for £50 or for £500 per axle. Where actually they all look quite similar and are designed to do the job. SO, what should i get?

I do spend some time recovering people (or did last year) and helping out the local emergency services and local community, ambulance and care homes
Mrs due late Nov for baby no.1 - i am not letting any snow stop us getting to the hospital
Live in rural and hilly area with one main road then lots of B's and lanes

All seem to have similar design and 16mm links, so what are the differences?

What should i buy?

Cheers

Nick

I have a set (four) of heavy duty Pewags from Devon 4x4 for the 285/75 x 16 MTs on my Defender, and have been completely satisfied with them. I also have a set (four) of heavy-duty RUDs for the 7.50 x 16 MTs on my Series 1 and have been equally satisifed with them.

My recommendation would be any reputable make (i.e., Pewag or Rudd) of basket-pattern chain designed for light commercial vehicles.

Cheap chains are like any cheap tool - more expensive and dangerous in the long run.

If you want Pewag snow chains I strongly recommend that you google the snow chain shop. Run by Brindleys. They carry a wide range of Pewags and do next day delivery and prices are more reasonable then elsewhere.

With 30mm spacers your turning circle will be the same.

From personal experience Boosts, ZU's and Terrafirma wheels don't require spacers with 285's 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

With 285/75 KL71's on standard Boost alloys without spacers on my 110 my turning circle was adversely affected. The vehicle was completely drivable but you had to bear in mind that the manoeuverability was affected.

With the above wheels and tyres on 30mm spacers the lockstops do not need adjusting from the standard settings and the turning circle is standard.

So with 285's on Boost alloys you do not need spacers but they will restore the original turning circle and make life easier.

285's are of course wider than the recommended max width for a Boost, so if you change the rim then buy one with an appropriate offset and dispense with the spacer. However, I have run 285's on Boosts for a lot of miles and had no problems with them.
