Revotec fan control
Hi guys

I have spent my 200 Tdi a nice Revotec fan kit, so far so good. The question now is, what is the optimal sensor setting to activate the fan? The thermostat opens at 88° and currently the fan starts at 97 ° as far as I remember. As a consequence, the gauge shows the temperature somewhere between the middle and the red section, however with my old setup the needle stayed more ore less in the centre of the gauge.

What is the optimal setting for an old Tdi, anyone?

The first thing to say is that the fan is only an important factor when the air flow through the radiator is low. The rule of thumb is sub-30mph, above that and there should be adequate air flow to keep your engine cool. So think sitting in traffic on a hot day or slow low gear manoeuvring off road.

The standard tdi thermostat opens at 88DegC and the normal operating temperature should be between 70ish and 80ish DegC. So at low speed you want the fan to ideally come on at about the same temperature as the thermostat opens... say 90DegC.

As an aside. It is absolutely worth fitting an override switch somewhere in the cab so you can turn the fan off and on manually should it be required.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have a slightly different understanding though:

Since the thermostat opens at 88C I would assume the ideal operating temperature of the engine is more or less 88C. Now due to the inertia of the system the fan should not start at the same time the thermostat opens as this would cool down the engine "too much", i.e. well below operating temperature.

Am I wrong?
