New Engine Noise
Hi All

Had my TD5 for 14 years and never missed a beat, very reliable. Have been using it for commuting recently and have started to notice a ticking noise from the engine. Some history;

Vehicle is one of the last TD5's built. Has now done 78k and regularly serviced. Yes some modifications including remap about 11 years ago which has been superb. Starts immediately in all weathers, engine temperature normal, no smoke from exhaust, no unusual smells or leaks, fuel consumption unchanged, still pulls like a train in all gears.

New noise is a ticking metallic noise, speed of ticking increases relative to RPM, not loud but I can hear it. Bit like tappets in an old OHV engine. I'm guessing cam followers or timing chain. Anyone out there come across similar / is timing chain a service item / are cam followers a service item ?

Need your input on this one as scratching head ! 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

Are you sure it's not an exhaust gas leak? Check the manifold for leaks and also the flexible joint on the exhaust down pipe for cracks

Will check both suggestions but don’t think it’s exhaust manifold but you never know.

Just ordered a new oil centrifugal filter as this could become defective and cause similar noise.

Will start with basics before taking cam cover off. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

You could go old school and get yourself a mechanics stethoscope, ie Lisle 52500.. cheaper ones out there but they don’t perform as well. Great for locating where noises are coming from.

Could be one of a number of things.

Best thing would be to stand by the engine whilst someone revs it. Then you can try to locate the noise more accurately.

Check the pulleys, as they can make odd noises.

The hydraulic lash adjusters can make tapping noises, but usually that is most noticeable at idle.

Hopefully it’s something simple and easy to resolve. Charlie

Watching the thread with interest as I am also trying to investigate a similar issue which is leading to a lot of head scratching! Confused BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group

Following also.

155,000 miles with a very similar issue that intermittently presents around 2500rpm.

Might have found the issue - and its not the engine.

Will know more in a few weeks. Still drives perfectly so not a major issue just curious.

Problem found...

Spigot bearing at the end of gearbox output shaft completely disintegrated. Output shaft then suffered with excessive play causing the noise to be transferred through engine and therefore difficult to pinpoint.

New gearbox from Ashcroft Engineering installed along with their upgraded billet release bearing, new clutch and pressure plate (as a precaution) and new spigot bearing.

Noise gone, gearbox tight and Landy drives like new again.

Just put through yearly MOT and passed first time.

So now its sorted it is a pity that it will be going up for sale soon. After nearly 15 years of ownership it is time for someone else to enjoy a great Defender. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top
