Beautiful day for a breakdown.

Came around the bend and had no power, coasted to a stop before it cut out, thankfully a distance from the bend.

After some humming and ahhing, and I spotted the cable connecting to the fuel pump had frayed away at the connector. The same cable that @geobloke and I had seen flapping about a few weeks ago and I made a mental note of “I really must sort that soon...”. Of course I didn’t. Lesson learnt.

Managed to separate the cable further up at a fuel cut off (probably the cause of this wire not being strapped to something) and wedge that connector against the fuel pump connector - of course I’d emptied out all my tools to fit the insulation mentioned above, so this would have to do. I then wedged this in place.

Got me home and replaced the connector - good as new now. Won’t be getting complacent about loose cables again - the rest are fine fortunately.

RAC were due to arrive about midnight from what I could tell, absolutely useless.

Aye, lessons learnt but ultimately did enjoy my little adventure and I’m proud of my roadside fix 😂

Sold the Alfa last week so she was pressed into daily service - stood up to it perfectly apart from this.

New car arrives Sunday so she can have a rest again then - until the MOT next week…

Something equally blue and fast, a total contrast to the defender, aside from being awd:

The Alfa was brilliant when working but was becoming a pain unfortunately.

Another riveting update 😁

Something that’s bugged me for ages - these side windows.

A previous owner had fitted incorrect sized rivets, and then not refitted the seal as they overlapped the channel. It looked crap and wasn’t totally watertight in the torrential rain last week.

Learned how to rivet, refitted correct rivets and fitted the seal.

Absolutely evil job - getting the seal around the corners was horrendous - took over two hours in total even with the correct tool. I miss my fingertips.

Looks much better now and should be something approaching watertight.

Love the attention to detail. The wrong size rivets would have bugged me no end too!

Progress made on the interior to make it more useable (with long motorway journeys a regular feature).

Fully soundproofed the roof now with dodomat - both the Deadn and the closed foam stuff, and the front headlining fitted. Was going to fit the rear but couldn’t get the loom for the interior light from my usual shop (lrparts).

Am I right in thinking that I can just chop the purple (live) to the front light, splice in an extended purple, and run this to the rear light? Earth from the roof. Switched just mimics the front in this scenario as I don’t have a rear door switch on an 89? Explain it like I’m 5…

Did an alright job of insulating around the windows but not 100% happy - did it all properly with templates but the foam stretches as you stick it. Bah humbug. The inconsistent gaps will bug me for the next 20 years…

Decided I needed a bottom rear door seal (noisy and can’t be good for longevity) and got fed up of my toolboxes rattling on the metal floor, so treated her to a genuine (and rather pricey) load bay liner and stainless door retainer+seal. So happy with how clean and tidy it looks now.

If you read all that here’s some photos as your reward:

Front headlining in with Masai LEDs:

After front headlining, rear not deadened yet:

Rear deadened with “nearly there” alignment of foam, headlining to follow:

Been a while since I posted!

Bought an old 997 which has been taking up much of my attention (hated the golf R unfortunately) and just been bumbling about in the Landy enjoying it.

Unfortunately I’m pulled into my drive last week to see oil pouring out the bottom. Brake vacuum pump had failed, popping out the plug, evacuating the oil in the process. Fortunately caught it with some oil left.

Seems this is an extremely common failure of these parts, this being a britpart part but the “unipump“ replacement that everywhere offers not being much better.

Anyway - what a pain to get to this thing is! Managed to get it off today and I’ll go get a new one from LR Centre this week. My shiny galv chassis and engine mount are now incredibly rustproof covered in oil too.
