United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Indus Silver
Puma Turbo and intercooler replacement
Hello All, I have had my 110 2009 Defender since November and have been using as my daily. Unfortunately intercooler weld had split and there was a massive oil spray from the intercooler and also there is a significant play in turbo. So my mechanic recommended me too get both intercooler and turbo replaced and I decided to have a go at replacing them. I have removed the intercooler completely and stuck at removing the turbo. I have undone all the bolts holding the turbo but unable to get to the oil return pipe nuts. Any suggestions or tips on how to remove them and also would like your views on new vs reconditioned turbo.
Thanks

During the upgrade program on my previous SAAB Viggen Coupe, I had the turbo overhauled, flowed and smoothed, they also matched it to the turbo manifold for optimum gas flow. Not Hybrid, but fully optimised..

The only way I could do this was to get a used tired turbo and manifold from a specialist breaker, deliver this to CR turbos (https://www.crturbos.co.uk/)and then once the work was complete have it installed. (The Viggen was my daily driver.)

If I was going to do this to my Puma 110, I'd do the same get a manifold and turbo from a breakers, and send to turbo specialist for either optimisation or hybrid, the only thing that complicates things are that the mapping to optimise the increaseed air flow.

A rebuilt turbo is as good or even better than new: Turbo Technics (https://www.turbotechnics.com/) supply the turbos to several Defender specialists. Zaid-M
