2.2 Puma Owners - Oil Service light frequency?
Hi all,

New to the site so please do point me in the right direction if this has already been polled.

I have owned a 2015 Defender for 12 months and the oil service light comes on every two months, almost like clockwork.

I’m interested in knowing the frequency that others experience in have their oil services lights come on for a 2.2l Puma?

Thanks
Dave

Once a year, on the anniversary of the service reset.
I've never had it come on sooner than that. Never seen the dpf light either.
Normally covers between 4,000 and 8,000 miles/ year, lots of short runs (3miles) and regular long runs every few weeks.

I thought that the oil service on the 2.2 is also calculated from the number of active dpf regens done.
This due to the possible diesel dilution in the oil. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi again Ian,

I read the thread of the post you suggested and it covers why the light comes on (great post btw) but I am specifically interested is how often people see theirs coming on with respect to your point 3 and the ECU calculation of oil dilution as feel mine is coming on far far more than I would expect and have ever experienced from other diesel trucks.

However maybe also my question should be has anyone experienced any issue with their ECU for the oil service light. I just feel even 8 weeks is too frequent so could it be a sign of another issue hiding away?

Any experience in this? Thoughts?

Thanks

I agree 8 weeks sounds far too short an interval for the oil service light coming on.
Mine comes on only after a year since the last reset.
I only do around 6 or 7k miles annually.

Ok, so I assume you are doing an oil service counter reset as denoted in the post, and you can see it’s worked as the oil service light goes off. then after 8 weeks the oil service light comes back on and this is repeated every circa 8 weeks.

If this is the case It is definitely not right. It’s the first I’ve heard of such an issue. To better locate the issue answers to the following will help.

What miles are your doing during these 8 week periods and are they short journeys, lots of start stops etc then an occasional longer higher speed journey?

Has your DPF amber light, or red light come on at all ?

Have you an OBD2 scanner, and if so have you any diagnostic trouble codes?

My initial thoughts.
There is no sensor measuring oil dilution due to active dpf regeneration, it’s all calculated by the ECU based on volume of active regenerations , miles traveled, nature of miles traveled etc.

So either you have a bug in the ECU software, or the dpf wiring or dpf differential pressure sensor or the pipes going to it are faulty which is causing a very high number of unnecessary active regenerations . Which is causing significant oil dilution in extremely short timescales and the ECU is flagging this by displaying the oil service light.

See diagram and check pipes on part 21 and wiring going to the sensor at the top of part 21.

If you have a scanner or something like a scanguage you could check how often an active regen is happening by keeping an eye on exhaust gas temperature (500/600 C during active regen) or the dpf full %.

Thank you guys for your inputs and sorry for the delay. I’ve just been on a road trip with her, (long mileage) so going to see if she comes on again so quickly.

If not then I’m going to write it down to the 5miles trips I do in her a few times a week. I’m assuming a 5-10 mile trip would count as a short trip?

Cheers

I had my 2015 Puma 90 from new. It is a daily driver for me and so far have covered around 80000 miles. Daily journey to work is 8 mile each way. Regular longer journeys also carried out for camping etc. I saw the oil service light come on once at 5k miles. I change the oil every 5000 and have never seen the service oil warning since then.
I do monitor the DPF regen as I also use a live ODBC screen . This occurs about once per week for me
Hope this may be of use.

Great!! Very similar to my usage but very different oil service might frequency.

I’ll have a look at getting the monitor also then.

Thanks
