Wales 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Zermatt Silver
I’m really not sure yet. I’ve got a bit more reading to do. But the old double nut does seem a lot more straight forward and definitively geared towards home DIY’ers. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

It’s a little bit OTT and possibly on the expensive side. But I’ve never done a Defender wheel bearing, so I figured having the whole kitchen sink for the first time may help a little.


That actually looks a good kit, and the only thing it lacks is the stub axle which may be needed if one of the bearings has picked up, or if the hub seal land is worn.

This was my next thought. I’ve not stripped the hub down yet. But I do have a potential stub axle change in the back of my mind. Do it all right the first time and then it’ll be right for another 100k. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

There seems to be some suggestions of changing the stub axle for a fresh one to do the conversion? 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

There is no swap of stub axle. Just a case of leaving spacer out. Using two washers (one thick, one thin) and two nuts instead of the thick washer, and a stake nut. It’s easier to check and adjust especially road side, and I dislike the use of stake nut on the tread, as it can damage the thread.

Nice little upgrade completed today.

Genuine LR single piece HD rear shafts. No idea why the single piece aren’t a standard fit item on the Defender. Can’t believe the difference in tightening up the driveline after fitting these.

They were standard from from chassis GA481822 (2014 or thereabout as I recall) onwards (the time when presumably the warranty costs from customer complaining about backlash outweighed the cost of not doing something about them).

When I bought mine in 2017 they were a blistering £470 or so each and were bizarrely made in South Korea, a country which I don't readily associate with quality engineering.

That’s good insight- thank you. I’m surprised it took them that long to decide against the 2 piece shaft. Proper crap design.

Thankfully I paid near half that, for the pair.. (£220 delivered for the pair, if I remember correctly) 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.
