Weight Limit of a roof rack
Hello all,

Just wondering what the weight limit of a roof rack is? Not the rack itself (I have a 2m Flat Dog Rax) but the roof torsional limit?

Looking to carry some wood for a mate, he estimates 200kgs. They’re planks, so can obviously be spread over the width of the vehicle.

What limit? How many runs?

Ta. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I seem to recall 75kg being the limit (including the rack!).
Outside of Europe it was 150kg....

The max load for the roof is 75kg for UK spec vehicles, that would include the rack and any load

If you have a RoW spec then I think it’s either 125or 150kg

Interestingly, just dug out the 2015 brochure and it is also quoting 150kg for UK vehicles (inc the rack).

The 2010 brochure is also quoting 150kg

I think the recommended weight has been 150kg for quite a few years now, probably after LR realised that they were selling roof racks that were next to useless under the 75kg limit due to their self-weight.

In practice of course, Land Rovers have been loaded to more than either of these limits almost since they were given hard roofs. Common sense was typically the limiting factor, although not always...

The 150kg is more around the 'Dynamic Load' when the vehicle is in motion.

Thanks all. Looks like two lifts then. I fairly easily picked up the Rax, so I’m guessing 20-30kgs, plus fixings. So 100kgs will play it safe. Need to think this through as I’m going up a mountain trail with a fair amount of wobbling, tipping, camber and reverse camber. Sadly we can’t get a trailer up there, at least not one we can hire - low ground clearance. Monsieur Le Grenadier

18 sheets of 12mm plasterboard, (marked at 25kg -dont know if thats accurate) 4 adults, 72 bottles of wine in the boot, driven sensibly not an issue at all.

Brought 40m2 of 18mm T&G floorboards on the roof plus all our holiday stuff, tools etc a few years ago Worcestershire to here again not an issue if driven sensibly.

So, weight according to the wood merchant was 250kgs, split between two vehicles. Think total weight was 175kgs on mine, including rack, didn’t miss a beat. Took it easy on the trails (lots of cambers) to minimise dynamic stress on the roof, and all good. Job (and delivery) a success….. Thumbs Up
