Boost alloys - tyres

Hi, on my 90 TD5 it currently has 235/85 r16 BF Goodrich KO2’s. I want something slightly wider and a bit less aggressive tyres as I mainly do road driving with some light grass terrain. I don’t want to do any mods in terms of spacers or steering lock and wondering what tyres and sizes people have (pics would be even better!) to keep things close to the standard ratios of the original tyres. I could keep with 235/85 and go for something less aggressive but worry these will fill the arches less so than what’s on now. I’d like the Maxxis Bravo AT771’s but they don’t come in a near enough size (none of the below). I’ve been told by a tyre company the equivalent to 235/85 r16 would be:
245/80 or
255/75 or
265/70 (but this size would need some adjustments)
Any suggestions please? Michelins Latitude cross are another tyre I quite like but are quite a bit less aggressive looking.

The other option is something like the Cooper Discoverer AT3 in 265/75/16. Less aggressive than a KO2 but in a size that was also used by Land Rover and is the same as 235/85/16.

Lots of threads about tires been written over time. I started a similar one on October last year and the result was I bought Michelin Latitudes. They are a great tyre for me and to make it even better Qwik Fit had them on offer!

For "me" a good road tyre without too much aggression.

Wow Maxxis really do some odd non-Defender tyre sizes Shocked

No 235/85/16 or 265/75/16... Weird.

Anyway, may I suggest you choose a different manufacturer, perhaps General Grabber AT3 or the Good Year AT Adventurer or dare I say it the Continental Cross Contact AT. All are excellent tyres and in standard sizes. Thumbs Up

I'm not sure that the things you're asking for are all compatible, to be honest. Wider and less aggressive will almost certainly be worse on grass (a notoriously tricky surface) and could also require alterations to lock stops. It also sounds like you want 'the look' but with a road biased tyre. I'd suggest it'll be difficult to tick all of those boxes without some compromise.

All of the sizes that you've suggested are smaller in diameter, to a greater or lesser extent, than the 235/85's you have fitted. As a consequence, regardless of width, none will fill the arches any better. The other 'stock' size that may be suitable is 265/75, fitted to some 90's a few years ago, but again these may require the lock stops to be tweaked. Having said that, they're usually set quite conservatively in the factory so you may not notice any difference.

There's a reason that LR settled on 235/85 as the stock size as it's the best compromise between all of those things. If the BFG AT is too aggressive for you then there are other options: the Michelin Latitude Cross are, by all accounts, a very good tyre and will provide the performance that you require on road and grass (up to a point - see the 'tricky' comment above). Personally, I'm a big fan of the General Grabber AT3, which is proving to be an excellent road tyre with a decent amount of grip off road and also benefits from being mountain/snowflake winter rated.

Others will have their own favourites and I'm sure will be along to share their views Very Happy Darren
