Changed stereo - now battery goes flat!
Hi all,

I recently swapped the original stereo in my 2012 TDCI for a JVC KD-X561DBT and updated all the speakers to Focals. I thought it would be a simple swap, and all seemed to be going well, until I realised that the battery now goes flat after 3-4 days of not using it. I didn't change anything else at the time, I didn't do anything complex, just unplugged old stereo & speakers, plugged in new ones.

Anyone experienced similar and could point me in the right direction to investigate?

thanks

Nick

Back in the day when I was more car audio inspired I recall this was an issue with the switched and permanent lives.

The red and yellow wires at the back of the unit should be on bullet connectors, swap them over so it is red to yellow and yellow to red.

Try this and see if the battery remains charged. Also test to see whether the memory still remains after you switch it off and on again (check that the unit does not lose its saved radio stations etc) > 110 XS Double Cab

As Hank says, this is most likely the issue.

What is happening now is your head unit is getting ignition supply in permanently from battery when it should only be with ignition on and permanent live is only on with ignition which likely means your HU memory is erased all the time. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Could well be the case. I'm happy with my old (as in tape-player-old Smile ) Sony unit. I wired it to permanent live to use it without the ignition key (it's a nuisance in a camper). Only uses a few mA on standby.

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions - I'll take a look tomorrow in the day light. I think I remember that there was just a single big plug thing, (an ISO connector?) that I couldn't get wrong!

I’ve just had same issue. Be wiring further down past the iso plug. In my case both sources were connected to a permanent live.

My then girlfriends car had the radio 'professionally' installed. They also swapped the red and yellow wires, but the only downside was that the memory was lost on every ignition off/on cycle. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
