And then they refuse to cover it under warranty due to abuse  --

I had a similar sounding problem on my 110, sounded like the drive train was about to fall out every time I changed gear. Went in for a new clutch (and headland bezels!) under warranty this week. Picked it up yesterday and it is now much better, no chunks or anything. Service manager said the new clutch kit has updated retainers for the springs on the plates. So keeping fingers crossed...

Took the landy in yesterday.
They called now to say 'there is a linkage kit that fits between the clutch & the gearbox' that can reduce the clunking, whatever that means...  --

Well it was serviced! sort of!
Anyway, the horendous backlash is down to a warped handbrake drum apparently.  They're now well aware of what i thought of this diagnosis and that i was more than happy to keep wasting their time for as long as they waste mine. They also recon that they not seen rusty headlamp bezels before either!
Total Muppetry. 
It's now booked it in for the 5th Oct. If anyone on the forum works at Sturgess Leicester. 'ave a word will you? "If it ain't sideways, you just ain't tryin'! |

Update!
I duly arrived at Sturgess' 8:00am yesterday as previously arranged only to be told that I wasn't booked in as the headlamp bezels and brake drum are on back order and they knew nothing about the transmission fault. I was also told that I could still have the courtesy car as that was booked out to me for the day! WTF? I was assured that I would be contacted before the end of the day to rearrange the booking. I'm still waiting! On the upside, it's nice to see that Sturgess Land Rover's level of customer focused service is just as bad as their Jaguar department. Just got the landy back from LR.
They replaced the part of the gearbox casing where the gear selector goes - there is a TSB from April/May 2010. The new casing has two guiding slots instead of one and a different selector arm (?). Gear changes are definitely easier, but still major clunking while clutch is fully depressed and moving between gears. Releasing the clutch in neutral also produces a loud 'clack'. I understand they just changed the assembly where the selector fits?

OK, got the 90 back from Sturgess.
New handbrake drum fitted (cause it was bent, or wobbly, or something) "and we've made some adjustments"says the soft soap man. "To what?" i ask. "err, we've made some adjustments" was the reply."OK, what. to the handbrake? transmission? what?" I enquire. "err, to the handbrake" is the response i get from soft soap man. You can guess that i'm starting get a little cheesed off at this point at hearing the usual Sturgess bullsh!t. So i drive off to find the gear selection is really stiff (so that's the adjustment they've made then!) there's still transmission lash and now the handbrake lever is on almost the last click of it's ratchet. So it'll be going back to Sturgess next week for a second bite of the cherry then! Not happy! "If it ain't sideways, you just ain't tryin'! |

Well at least you've helped us make a choice. Was going to Leicester today to talk about a new 110 UW. Looks like I'll be heading to Melton Mowbray instead now

I can't recommend Ivan at Sturgess highly enough. I bought a defender from him when he was a Trinity. he's a genuinely nice bloke and an enthusiast of the marque as well. It's fair to say that the only reason i bought a Defender from Sturgess was because i could deal with Ivan. Their service centre is remote from the showroom and i think this is where there after sales service delivery starts to fall down.
I also went to Marshalls at Melton (as I drive past it twice a day it would have made sense to buy from them) but the sales guy came across such a patronising tw@t that i vowed never to step in there showroom again. I honestly don't think he wanted to sell me a new Defender. he kept trying to sell me (well) used pick ups for some reason  "If it ain't sideways, you just ain't tryin'! |

Strangely enough my boss also swears by Ivan. Shame the sales guy I got wasn't Ivan even though I asked by name as he wasn't in when I went. Maybe then my opinion would be different. |
