Older model never had it.
you could replace the floor mat with some stable matting, the kind with straight groves on one side and bobbles on the other. its heavy so will offer some sound proofing and with the bobble side down actually allows air to pass. just a thought. Use the original as a template and use tin snips to cut it. |

I ran my old 90 without carpets, the only carpets it had was around the seat box vertical sides, and a bit bite on the bulkhead sides and sound insulation on the transmission tunnel. The aluminium floor panel got polished all the way to bare aluminium by the heels of my shoes... it looked so agricultural but fit for purpose. I used to tow my boat in and off the slip way, so used to get in with sea water dripping flip flops. But still the result was a perfect bulkhead, no rust in the footwells, and just minor corrosion on the floor panel.
Your floor panel carpet is part of the transmission tunnel, right? On my 2012 Defender. the floor panel carpet is a separate part from the transmission carpet. But it has a different trim, as the seat box and transmission tunnel is covered in carpet material. Getting the whole floor matting + transmission tunnel mat out in one piece is not easy as it is so cumbersome, and generally results in breaking the sound deadening material. Same issue here. Do not have the floor mats, but have the footwell mats and those are often wet as water ingress still not fully solved. Also interested in knowing how to cleanly remove them without breaking anything. Idea behind is to diagnose the water ingress more easily.

Hard to see on the second photo, but sometimes we have condensation underneath the floor mat (certain outside temperatures plus heat from exhaust underneath. So removing the mats in the front section wouldn't help.
