Some toughened glass can shatter going from cold to hot and vice versa, as it expands and contracts and can’t handle the stress.
Without looking at one broken in person, it’s difficult to pinpoint the cause, if for instance it gets hit with something it is obvious as the glass ‘spider-webs’ from the point of impact… if it’s a constant pattern throughout it’s usually stress from expansion/contracting.

behind the glass I see rust. maybe there was water and ice formed so the glass burst. but it's not my fault. maybe the glass was not properly glued at the factory

Could it be the result of accumulated condensation? If yes, think it is a design flaw. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

This is a very odd failure pattern. Interested and following! Would love to see more pictures -- possible to take a few once that glass is removed?

It does look as if those rust-colored areas could perhaps be an adhesive in one image, but then there's a circular spot in the other photo above where it does look like rust. I wonder if the metal part that's rusting is manufactured attached to the window glass as a spacer, and that is what is rusting? If we had a photo of a new piece of this glass we might be able to determine.

I haven't stuck a magnet on my tailgate / rear cargo door yet to see if it's steel or aluminum.
