300 tdi engine breathing strongly from oil cap and dipstick
I need some advice form the knowledgeable collective please ....A mate of mine is having problems

300 tdi defender, done just over 100K, full service history.

Engines runs sweet and pulls well, does not use lots of oil, does not use coolant, no obvious sign of blue /white smoke out of exhaust

However, it breathes heavy....I mean really heavy and its getting worse. Oil pools in the intercooler intake pipe and drips out, he also has some gasket weaps. Its got a lot worse lately.

Take the oil filler off when ticking over and its chuffing smoke out. Lift dipstick and you get the same.

He added an oil catch can and it made it worse. To the point that it was blowing oil residue out of the closed oil filler cap which was collecting on the engine cover. Obviously removed the catch can.

Breather pipes are all clear and in good condition, cyclone breather replaced. Still the same.

Its seems unlikely to me to be piston blowby. Engine isnt especially high mileage and has been well looked after. Also he has no obvious smoke from exhaust which if he has so much blowby to create this much pressure surely he would be burning oil too? Engine isnt rough and sounds fine when running

Starting to think he may have a head gasket failure problem to create so much pressure in both the sump and rocker cover area, perhaps from a piston or from an exhaust valve into an oil way.

Was going to compression test it next.

Any thoughts or views would be much appreciated

I'd go with head gasket failure. Its not a difficult job to do. 👍
I use an elring head gasket from Turners

Mike had a pretty bad one, turned out to be a leak on the vacuum pump.
