You can download sections of Google maps so it will work with no phone signal.

I'm using Google Maps for road navigation and a Garmin Montana 750i for Topo/Offroad mapping. After trying Gaia GPS which kind of works with Carplay I found there is no real alternative to a proper GPS device especially for trails.
