On TV - building the new Defender
On More4 (Freeview 18 ) tomorrow, Tuesday 7th December at 21:00, "How To Build: Land Rover the process of creating a Land Rover Defender, designed in the UK and built in a new facility in Slovakia"

Also available an hour later on Freeview 86.

This could be an interesting contrast to this -"How to build a vehicle in the 21st Century using techniques which are 100 years out of date"

Factory was interesting, and the Slovakians seem like a passionate and motivated bunch, but it does beg the question if two minutes per stand is long enough given on going QC issues. And 24 mins to build a full dashboard with all the electrical components. Whistle And a 55kg wiring loom? Shocked

As for the rest of it, I’m sorry, but what a load of marketing guff. Clearly scripted by the LR marketing team. All the other episodes of this excellent series have been delving in to the real people, who clearly love where they work and what they do such as Morgan, Caterham, BAC etc. The junior mechanics given free reign to say what they want. The slightly odd bloke in the spares department. The other odd bloke who’s clearly inhaled too many fumes in the paint shop. The designers who talk about their cars like they’re kids in a sweet job, not a sales force. But all, to the last man and women, genuinely enthused about their car, their brand and their legacy.

This episode was just executive talking heads being sent out to spin some LR BS. Did you notice the over emphasis on watertightness? One of the women mentioned it three times in just one clip. What about On QC? Or the quality of the electrics? What about the numerous suited types exclaiming ‘when you’re in the desert’ or ‘when you’re in the jungle’, whilst wearing gold cords and likely never having been near either. Or over egging the soft close rear hinged door or the wading sensors. Or the smartphone style interFace. Whilst extolling the fact that the original (simple, functional, easily engineered, easily fixed and designed buy guys with beards and who would wear sandales with socks) was the first vehicle to conquer the globe. This won’t ever be if they have team members wondering if the sparkle in the paint will make the vehicle look rugged.

Even the narrator was made to talk nonsense written for him by someone in Grayson, for example that the 900mm wading ability is what has been appealing to the adventurous nature of the buyers. Really? The wading? How many will wade anything bar a UK pothole?

And then the Professor saying the original was a workhorse where as this has evolved and the car now appeals to a wide range of buyers. Who, as the narrator pointed out, want a Santorini black SUV with 20” Off Road (that was actually stated) alloys. Isn’t that an oxymoron?

Frankly the funniest truism, which clearly escaped the LR marketing department, was the statement at the end during the road test when the narrator said ‘And now the Defender will be sent over the roughest terrain it will ever experience’. A 100m indoor track of bumps and cobble stones. Quite probably true.

But what an exercise in selling the vehicle and trying to green-oval-wash the brand's legacy of QC, waterproofing and electrics problems.

Bar humbug I know, but what a load of piffle paffle. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Agree with you Grenadier.

Once again it shows that Land Rover sells on nostalgia, but doesn’t really want anything to do with it.

Also, it must be sad to be ‘passionate’ about the building process when I am guessing most of the workforce will never get the opportunity (read salary) to pay for one…….

Anyway, worth watching for the team leader of the dash board section……. Whistle

I am becoming increasingly convinced the the great God of Verticality, Gerry, is actually bonkers. I think he has been talking nonsense for so long that he now believes what he is saying.

It did however, as I though it would, make an interesting contrast to the YouTube link I included in my original post showing the final production methods of the old Defender, methods which involved something a hundred times the man-hours per vehicle, and require men with hammers to make the panels fit go into place. At least the new production line seems to have fully embraced modern methods and the modern approach to quality.

That 55kg wiring harness worries me, one serious fault with the harness will probably write off the vehicle due to the high cost of replacing it. I was intrigued by the emphasis on sealing and water-proofing, especially given the recent information posted on this forum about leaks, and the production of a Water Ingress Manual for the ND. A damage limitation exercise, perhaps?

I have to say that it really bugs me as well to hear leaf spring Land-Rovers being described as "Defenders".

Most creatives / designers who have reached a decent level of responsibility within a large structure are usually at risk of being consumed by their own smugness to the point where they make a neutron star look like a paper weight...
