Fan Pulley Bearing Noise?
Been trying to trace a rattling/tapping noise on the TD5 and I think it might be the fan pulley bearing (Not the fan itself). With the belt and fan off you can hold the pulley and rock it and you can hear a metallic rattle so I thought bearing. I removed the three bolts holding the pulley on and checked the flange which showed no movement, bolted the pulley back on and all play had gone and rotated freely. Put the belt back on and took if for a drive, rattle free BUT came back after a mile, took belt back off and the pulley would rattle again as if it was loose on the bolts (which it wasn't)
Is it the bearing or could the pulley be at fault somehow?
Quick video below.

Hello. This is a well known problem and is a fairly easy DIY fix. Just take a little bit of tool juggling.

Everything you need to know is here - http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Fan_bearing.html

Excellent instructions. When I did this I left the bearing in the freezer for about an hour which allowed it to slide easily in to the aluminium housing. Leave it to warm up slowly over night then finish the install when everything is back up to temp.

When you get the old bearing out you will find that it is dry as a bone, hence the bearing rattle or grumble.

Thank you the reply. Followed the instructions and fitted a new SKF bearing today.
Unfortunately there is still a rattle when you hold the pulley and move it as you would to check a wheel bearing. So it's not the bearing, checked the pulley for cracks and it looks fine.
It's only a slight movement but I guess there shouldn't be any, bit annoying as it seems I changed it for no reason . BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group
