It's the earth return on the towing electrics (I haven't checked the standard wiring so this was just my initial thought) which means the current path would be via chassis/body parts. Of note is that the corrosion seems to exist only on the side of the vehicle where the battery resides. My concern is whether plugging a charger into the towing electric socket is accelerating galvanic reactions by fuelling/turbocharging the process. If this was the case then it would seem better to either connect a charger direct to the battery terminals, or run a separate earth return cable from the towing socket direct to the battery (or maybe the main battery earthing point. Utimately, on a vehicle so prone to the issue, it might be worthwhile to run cables to earth busbars around the vehicle and so remove the chassis/bodywork from all circuits. |

I'd be interested to know how yours is looking and how long it's been fitted. Mine's been connected like this for maybe 5+ years (I'll have to check my records to see when I bought the connector), the first 3 out in the open, the last two under a carport. So conditions have been wet/moist, again ideal conditions for galvanic corrosion to thrive in. |

Supacat. My 90 is a 2015 model and is garaged and has had a Ctek charger fitted through the 13 pin socket from day one. I've replaced many of the original nuts, bolts and washers with stainless and therefore might expect it to be more susceptible to galvanic corrosion. I had a good look around the vehicle yesterday and found no evidence of corrosion like you are experiencing. Defender 90XS SW

![]() Checking my records the trailer socket connector has been on mine since April 2013 - so a little longer than I had originaly thought - 8 years and 8 months!
